Say what you want about Avery. I’m not hear to defend his douchiness or whether he is just another NHL pest that just gets under peoples skins more effectively then others. Just ask Marty Broduer waht he thinks. Avery left his mark there by having the rulebook changed. Some of you say his teamates don’t like him. I’m not sure about that. I do know he is very popular with fans at MSG.

I don’t think the ‘sloppy seconds’ comment / suspension was the end of his career, I could give a crap about that. I will always remember him for tapping Tim Thomas in the back of the helmet while he was stretching during a TV timeout, then acting incredulous when Thomas goes after him for retribution. I don’t expect everyone out there to remember that specific incident, but it’s just one of many examples of the chicken$hit, gutless elements this puke brought to the game. Not even his teammates like him, that says about all I need to now.

However, I agree with the other comments on this site, that the NHL’s handling of the sloppy seconds comment was embarrassing. Randy Jones nearly killed Patrice Bergeron & only got a 2 game suspension, but the NHL gave Avery an indefinite suspension at first, and it eventually ended up being 6 or 7 games. That situation was a much biger black eye for the NHL than it was for Avery. We already knew he was a piece of $hit.

Even though what you say might be true, Avery making sure the cameras caught him saying it so he could get some face time on TSN really made him look like the clown he is. He showed how much of an embarrassment to the league he was with that. Both the Stars and the NHL agree.

yes that’s also true, but the fact is that guys like Avery are good for the game because they “entertain” … can you imagine if everyone talked liked Crosby with his monotone “calculated” robot-speak ? … it would be like George Orwell’s 1984 or something !

That’s a fair point, as Elisha Cuthbert’s net worth is likely more than that of Sean Avery’s … though probably not by much, given she’s only a B-grade actress with limited success, etc. Nonetheless, my point is that I found it incredible for the NHL to be more concerned about the feelings of some irrelevant bimbo, than they are about the carnage which is happening to their own membership. Smash someone’s head into the boards causing potential permanent brain injury and you might get what, 2-3 games ? … say something funny about some blond, parasitic actress and you’re career is essentially ruined ? … yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me !

To this day, I still don’t get what the big deal was with Avery’s “sloppy seconds” comments from a few seasons back ? If anything, it provided for great entertainment at the time and he was actually being factual by calling a spade a spade. Most importantly however, no damage was inflicted at all except perhaps the egos of the parties involved … yet Avery had to pay “hell” for that ? It continues to baffle me to this day, how smashing someone’s head into the boards is okay, but calling out a gold-digger for what she really is is completely off limits ? … total hypocrisy I say ! …
