If it’s within the shootout rules then too bad. The shootout really isn’t made to showcase the goalie’s skills, (some nights they can steal the show) but for the shooters to show off what they can do when they have time and space. That’s why most people hate shootouts. It’s worth a point in the standings, but it just seems like a cheap tactic by the NHL to get a couple more fans. I personally would rather see 4 on 4 hockey for 5 minutes and if no one scores they can go 3 on 3. Be cool to see two forwards and a D out there.

the shootout needs to be looked at in this manner – could you get away with that move in a game situation?

the spin deke?.. sure? if your fast enough and willing to get throttled by the back checking defensmen who is no doubt on your ass!

it’s the walking speed shootouts that drive me nuts.. like Paddy Kane’s slow mo triple deke many weeks ago. you’d never get away with that crap in a game situation.

in conclusion, the spin deke? good! the walking speed – i’m going to take my sweet ass time – deke? not so much.

I’m not a fan of the spin-a-rama when the puck stops its forward moving momentum … but having said that it’s already been discussed and accepted to I need to let that go, and as long as the players movement isnt stopped I dont really have an issue with it anyways.

As far as it being somehow unethical because it gives the goalies no chance … that’s just silly. If that was the case every player would use it on every occasion. (Gad can you imagine how boring a shootout would be if the palyers had to stay between the circles and skate in a straight line) The shootout is a goofy addition, a “bastardization” of the game if you will, and instituted for time management and entertainment purposes so really at this point I’d rather have the players mix it up as much as possible.

Millbury is absolutely right. I hate the shootout. It should be a break away, stay between the circles and go full speed as if a defenseman is chasing the skater. The goalie has no chance as it is right now!

I think everyone should do the 100 MPH Straight-in-your-face move that Gaborik did in the shootout after he deked Mike Smith out of his skates and was stopped by what Gaborik said post game was a spectacular save!
If you turn your back to the goalie, the shot should be instantly a no goal.

Now the Malik move between the legs, that is awesome!

I agree with MM.

Maybe they should just make it a 2-on-0 that way the heat is off the goalie and on the players. You’d be expected to score 100% basically so a miss means you lose.

Not a big fan of Milbury, but he’s got a point about spin-o-ramas. There are plenty of amazing, fan friendly entertaining moves that can be done without doing a pirouette and leaving the goalie with no chance. Pavel Datsyuk is an excellent example of this type of shootout wizardry.
