  1. ml3939 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Scott Hartnell robbed. Take out Ovechkin.

    • paulsdamnblog - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:23 PM

Agreed. Hartnell has come to play every night and earned a spot on the roster. I’m pretty sure a Senator or Ovie should be bumped for the guy.

      • artieart - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:11 PM

hey, ml3939 & paulsdamnblog, I don’t think the All Star Game needs a thug like Hartnell who “comes to play every night” (I mean, comes to try a run people thru the boards every night)!! Ovie ain’t having an Super 8 season nor are all those Sens but Hartnell? He doesn’t deserve it either!!!

      • paulsdamnblog - Jan 12, 2012 at 4:32 PM

@artieart- Hartnell is on a career year pace for goals, assists and points. He’s dropped his penalty minute totals and plays on the teams top line. And by the way, Ovie isn’t exactly “Mr. Clean”, he’s known to go knee to knee and take his fair share of cheap shots, ask Tim Gleeson, Sergei Gonchar and Brian Campbell!!! Also absent from the list above is Ovie’s team mate and the teams leading scorer Nicklas Backstrom! If anything he deserves it far more then Ovechkin. Ovechkin has mailed it in this season and neither Backstrom or Hartnell have, both have played with more heart and fire then Alexander Ovechkin. But hey, I guess the league needs to sell tickets so they go with the cement head over 2 who’ve earned the right.

      • paulsdamnblog - Jan 12, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Oh and just because Backstrom is injured at the moment, doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given the honor of being named an Allstar. He should be allowed to decline due to his head injury.

      • ml3939 - Jan 13, 2012 at 11:14 AM

@artieart- the only phrase that you wrote that was credible was “I don’t think.”

    • whlskey - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Agree to agree, but we all know the NHL All-Star game is, for the most part, a popularity contest. Just look at last year’s fantasy draft with Kessel getting picked last not because he was the worst player invited to the game, but because most of the NHL and it’s players can’t stand the guy. It’s like the kickball draft in 5th grade all over again.

      • whatswellydoing - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:41 PM

I dunno, at the time Kessel wasn’t playing very well. I would have picked him last regardless of his team.

    • stratomaticfan - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:42 PM

Bergeron would have gone before Hartnell.

      • ballistictrajectory - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:25 PM

Bergeron should have gone. Bergeron should receive a lot more respect from above ice level as he’s become one of the true core players on the team.

As far as sideshow Ovi… Donuts for everyone!

  2. johnny696 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:24 PM

    No Pekka Rinne???

    • vshehane - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:34 PM

      Pekka is huge omission!

  3. dirtydog57 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:25 PM

I guess the West doesn’t have that many ALLSTARS !!! or what

    • laurely515 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:47 PM

The first time I looked at it, yeah, I thought it was weird that while there were the same number of goalies from each conference, the East had two more representatives than the West in each of the other 3 groups. But if you consider that all six of the players voted in by the fans come from the Eastern Conference, it seems more balanced, especially considering the requirement that every team be represented.

  4. gnrfan8804 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:26 PM

    no vanek? lame

  5. terminalcityhockey - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Thanks for stuffing the ballot box Ottawa. I’m just glad that I can finally see Michalek at an All-Star event.

    • psujay - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Yea they pulled a pittsburgh last year…or Montreal a few years back

      • drewzducks - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:52 PM

As a Bruins fan I can say that Mike “the shoe” Milburys adding Knuckles Nilan back in the 90’s was an embarrassment.

  6. bcisleman - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:28 PM

Matt Moulson rates a spot over at least a half dozen of the Fs on the ASG roster. Just as well. If he went, he might get injured.

    • paulsdamnblog - Jan 12, 2012 at 6:30 PM

He’s a victim of playing for the Islanders, which is a weak excuse for not considering him for the Allstar Game.

  7. jkay1818 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:34 PM

No Hagelin for the rookies? Wow. I know he has played in half the games as these guys, but his numbers are still more comparable to most. But most impt, he should have been on it for the fastest skater comp alone. He would have been a favorite to win and would have at least been exciting.

  8. odj810 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:41 PM

what are thoughts on seguin? immense talent but think theres more deserving veterans who should have gotten the chance. like bergeron on his own team

    • drewzducks - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:54 PM

Agree with Bergey over the kid. May be most underrated player in league.

    • cmutimmah - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Product of a former top draft pick having a breakout season is a better story than Bergeron’s big season thus far.

In Seguin’s defense, he’s got a better +/- than Bergeron, and Bergie is getting all of the Selke talk because of faceoffs…

  9. 808pensfan - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:47 PM

James Neal? 21 goals, 15 assists

  10. terminalcityhockey - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:53 PM

Instead of the undeserving trio of Perry, Ryan & Getzlaf in Anaheim, at a point per game at age 41 it would have been nice to see Selanne get the ‘honor’.

    • ZDooley - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Selanne declined the invitation, and recommended that Perry go in his place.

  11. Stiller43 - Jan 12, 2012 at 1:57 PM

    …james neal?…heard of him?

  12. mydadyourmom - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:02 PM

Vanek? Neal? Hartnell? Teemu? Take out Perry Kane Ovy and Seguin.

  13. predhed1970 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:02 PM

No Pekka Rinne!¡! And they let Carey Price in with the mediocre season he is having. Voting has become a joke! Its suppose to be based upon how good of a season they are having not on who’s the most popular. Where is Selanne,Eberle,Sharp,D Boyle to name a few that definitely deserved to be on the roster!! RIDICULOUS!!!!

    • cmutimmah - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:59 PM

Sharp is injured, not expected back. Eberle has had his bouts with the injury bug also. Selanne declined the invite.

So your only real complaint is Dan Boyle… and pekka rinne (but instead of Pekka, what about Mike Smith?)

  14. proudliberal85392 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:14 PM

    Where’s Radim Vrbata?

  15. lsxphotog - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:15 PM

As with every year in recent history, there are players on there that may get a sweater, but they aren’t All-Stars.

  16. bbk1000 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:19 PM

The Rangers got the shaft….but I didn’t expect anything else so this is no surprise.

As long as they keep winning the games that matter, who cares.

    • stakex - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:24 PM

I certainly wouldn’t say the Rangers got the shaft. Considering that with the last 36 picks, the NHL needed to add at least one player from 27 teams… the Rangers having 3 players on the roster is pretty good.

      • bbk1000 - Jan 12, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Overstated a bit, but look at the roster.

As an older fan I actually don’t care who goes to the All Star game, I just would like the team to win another cup.

The Rangers rookies got overlooked, and I’m hoping it strengthens them as a unit…

  17. andidee15 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:24 PM

I’m a little sad to see Ryan O’Reilly left out. He might not be the most “popular” candidate, but he’s having a heck of a year and is by far the most deserving Av of this honor (even though Landeskog’s been playing extremely well for a rookie). I would have liked to see Scott Hartnell get a nod as well.

  18. kingskid98 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:26 PM

This is horrible. Hahahahah how is Perry, Seguin, Hossa and Tavares gonna make it. James neal? Zach parise? patrick sharp?? those guys deserve it. im a kings fan and i think quick is terrible, really in tough games against tough teams he blows the game. how the hell is he an all star. to be honest its all a popularity contenst. i understand theyre playing in ottawa but all those guys dont deserve it. Not even some of the big names do. whatever though im still gonna watch the game and watch malkin get the trick.

  19. dcfan4life - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:33 PM

Seriously, as a huge capitals fan i am wondering how Ovie really squeeked in. He is having an solid to good season but i dont think he deserves a spot. He wasnt sure he was deserving planning a vacation, isnt that a good sign that a guy shouldnt be in the all star game…?

  20. mickeyb21 - Jan 12, 2012 at 2:45 PM

The Blues backup goalie is their lone All-Star. This is the No. 2 team in the West right now.

The Blues are not where they are just because of their goalies. Someone like Shattenkirk or Backes should have gone over someone like Kane when Chicago already has two other more worthy reps.

    • paperlions - Jan 12, 2012 at 9:05 PM

The “problem” is that the blues have a balanced team with a lot of good players but no real stars….sometimes teams are good because everyone contributes something without anyone dominant player.

  22. drewzducks - Jan 12, 2012 at 3:01 PM

Price making it is awful. But cuz each team has to have a player they had no other choice. Congrats, the Habnots have become the KC Royals of the NHL. Ole ole…

  23. aswense - Jan 12, 2012 at 3:03 PM

artieart how does ovie deserve a spot more than hartnell…hartnell has more points and plays hard every night…im a rangers fan

  24. flyersfandave - Jan 12, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Hartnell is on fire this year. Deserves a nod. Hard nosed hockey has no place in the All Stars tho. Will they pick teams again that was a great addition.

  25. ronthecubsfan - Jan 12, 2012 at 4:02 PM

Congrats to my man Hossa. Just does everything well, works hard on PK, A little disappointed that there aren’t more Hawks, but it is what it is…

    • blackhawkfan - Jan 17, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Interesting that former Hawks Byfuglien and Campbell are in for the blue line and Keith isn’t…not that he deserves it cuz since winning the Cup he has been pretty average

  26. danphipps01 - Jan 12, 2012 at 4:36 PM

Kane’s doing alright, but I’m pretty annoyed a hit-and-miss ‘Hawk (by his own usually very high standards, at least) got in over any other Blues. A more offensive D-man like Shattenkirk would look good in the All-Star game. Lord knows he’s more suited to the “fuck defense” sytyle than Dan Girardi. And speaking of Rangers, Del Zotto and McDonagh seem to fit the mold better too. Girardi’s just a weird call.

Also: Bergeron over Ovi, Selanne over Perry, Hartnell’s easy enough to drop given the number of Flyers already in there and lastly, FUCKING BYFUGLIEN OVER EVANDER KANE? Look, I GET that he’s basically a forward playing D, but STILL. Kane’s having a career season. He’s earned his place.

  27. gooterbaby - Jan 12, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Good to see Koivu making his first appearance!!

  28. ymann19 - Jan 12, 2012 at 6:07 PM

    David Backes should be there¡!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. aswense - Jan 12, 2012 at 7:47 PM

    AnothEr goal for hartnell
