Okay, bigtanks logic is not the best. That does not change the fact that any time someone says something like “be better or shut your mouth”, they look like idiots. These guys are professional athletes that get mics shoved in their face all the time. Telling them to just shut up is asinine.

You know, I remember saying at the time that I had no problem with his comments – if anything, I’ve always enjoyed Recchi’s honesty. But I did have a problem that he said it after retirement. Badmouthing a team when you’re safely above and beyond a fair fight in retribution for talking smack is pretty classless to me. Of course, taken in context, when COULD he have said anything? During the series, I guess, but he was focused on the game at the time. But in those circumstances, I seriously feel you should just leave it. Yeah, you’ve got your opinion. Great. You’re not in the NHL anymore. Laying into another team when you’re an active player is fair, because often enough they’ll have someone drop the gloves with you in your next game – and Recchi, being a stand-up guy, would do it if he was still in the game. But he’s not – and since that’s not possible and you’re out of the game, it seems like the appropriate thing to do is accept that and not go looking for a camera or a radio station to talk shit to.

That having been said, I’m not surprised that he came back and kind of… not so much backed off of his comments, but put them in a more positive context. Still the same brutally honest guy, but also classy enough to recognize when he may have crossed a line. Good man. Always liked Recchi.

Recchi didn’t back off his comments. He just regrets bringing attention to himself by voicing his feelings. He is a future Hall of Famer who probably feels like he should be more of an ambassador of the game who shouldn’t be calling out the Canucks. But his remarks were not made in the heat of battle. He had time to think about his comments and measure them and it’s no secret the Canucks are just not a well liked team.

The context isn’t really conveyed in the article, Bieksa’s comments were made months ago – soon after Recchi’s comments, and months before Recchi expressed any regret.

Bieksa- when you are a HOF’er you can talk. Recchi is gonna score more goals in his career than games you play in yours. when it’s all said and done he will have played more than 1000 games more than you. so yeah, maybe he should be golfing or napping which you were doing when he touring with the cup. How many times is your name on the cup Bieska? you have a flopping, diving, and biting team – your claim to fame is a fluke goal. Now that the Sharks figured out they can abuse your soft team you’re in trouble.

Wasn’t Recchi being conciliatory? I don’t get the hate from Bieksa, I guess. Mark seemed to be somewhat apologetic about possibly starting a fire whose flames have seemingly been fanned ad nauseum regarding what is an excellent hockey team.
