Big House in the running to host 2013 Winter Classic

Jan 5, 2012, 5:15 PM EST

Big House

The University of Michigan’s athletic director has confirmed he’s spoken with the NHL about hosting next year’s Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.

“We have been approached by the NHL about utilizing our facility for the 2013 Winter Classic,” Dave Brandon said in a statement, as per AnnArbor.com. “There are a lot of complex circumstances that need to be ironed out before anything moves forward. We will have more to say if/when something materializes.”

This shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that the game will be played at Michigan Stadium (writes the guy who bet it would be held at Comerica Park.)

As the article states, “The Red Wings are owned by Mike Ilitch, who also owns the Detroit Tigers and Comerica Park, so among the complex circumstances that would need to be ironed out are how the profits would be split — be it from ticket sales, merchandise, vending, television rights, etc. — in an outside venue.”

No doubt it would be cool for over 100,000 fans to attend an NHL game. And if there’s something to be said for staging Winter Classics in iconic venues, the Big House certainly qualifies as iconic. Just think – the Red Wings could play a hockey game in the same place this happened:

On the other hand, there’s already been a hockey game played at the Big House. We already know what it looks like. Does that lessen the appeal?

Haven’t we seen Wings Blackhawks already?I know it’s supposed to be an”American”thing but why not a Montreal Toronto game next new years in the Skydome?Just open the roof and let the cold in.

lmao! The Notredame Broadcast Company sure loves giving it to Big Ten schools! Too bad they couldn’t even compete in that conference.

C’mon Jason… we’re all soooooo past it – that was two ‘era’s’ ago. GO BLUE!

@letsgo…It would never be a bad thing to play a hockey game at the Big House. No other venue in the country equals it at being ready, willing, able, and skilled at handling that size of a crowd. How about Red Wings V Sharks? The west-coasters might even brave the trip for that one.

@taking….No way an ‘All Canada’ think, Canada already does their own deal.

    Book it:
2013 Michigan Big House Red Wings V Sharks
2014 Invesco Field Avs V Canucks
2015 New Vikings Stadium Wild V Maple Leafs – Toronto mightl be near playoff ready by then ; p

I’ve been thinking there actually might be a decent chance that the Sharks would be the opponents if the Wing’s are hosting considering the playoff match ups the last two years. If that were to happen I would without a doubt make the trip there along with several of my friends.

K this is crap hockey is Canada’s game!!
What they should do is rotate every season one year in the USA the the next year in Canada
    Make everyone happy

2013 Winter Classic at the Big House. It’ll be the Red Wings against the Avalanche.

how quickly you canadians forget the “Heritage Classic”…

  6. mcfierce24 - Jan 5, 2012 at 8:10 PM

If this happens and its Red Wings / Bruins, I’ll make the trip from Rhode Island.

    Red Wings vs Toronto?

Rub it in to the Leafs and convince their fans to make the trip.

Who ever they play will have to be a nearby opponent. 100k is a lot of seats to fill.

    • hockeyfan1701 - Jan 5, 2012 at 9:01 PM

Have to agree, it will have to be someone who is close. 100,000 seats is a lot.

  8. bigfing - Jan 5, 2012 at 10:36 PM

    Sabres are fairly close.

  9. bcjim - Jan 6, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Lovely. Even the front row seats will need binoculars.

Seriously people these games are terrible ideas. If there are outdoor rinks somewhere that resemble indoor areans, minus the roof, fine. But putting a hockey game in a stadium is absolutely retarded.

    • kellyb9 - Jan 6, 2012 at 10:03 AM

“Even the front row seats will need binoculars” and people will pay thousands of dollars to sit there. That’s why the NHL does it. This actually confirms my suspicions that the NHL would prefer to play this game in a football stadium due to the increased capacity.

I went to the Big Chill at the Big House and sat in several different areas. There is not a bad seat in the Big House at all; even for hockey. Sitting in the nose bleads at the Big House is no different than sitting in the upper row at JLA for a wings game. If the Wings end up playing the Habs or Leafs it would be amazing; that stadium would be packed. It will most likely be a strict USA game seeing as how the NHL hasnt put a Can. team in the winter classic yet since all it is is a marketing ploy for the league.

At least the NHL know to keep it going with Original siz teams and original 12 teams playing. Teams like San Jose, PHX, Columbus, and any team out west and below New York won’t fill a 50k seat stadium. If Ilitch let’s this happen at the Big House it would be an amazing game and one of the most amazing venues in all of sports. Geux Blue and Go Wings!
