As a Canadiens fan, I can tell you this is one of few guys on the roster that all Habs fans wanted locked up long term. He never gets the credit he deserves for being one of the top defensive defenseman in the league year in and year out. I, along with everyone I know, was outraged that they gave Markov the long term extension this summer instead of Gorges and Wisneiwski and they’re clearly paying for that move down in 12th place right now. Hopefully this over commitment to 13 players next years spells the buyout of Gomez in the summer.

More shot blocks than Hamhuis and Orpik combined and a +6 rating on a team that’s scored considerably less goals than Vancouver and Pittsburgh suggests he’s every bit as good an own-zone guy as both those players. He’s only had one major injury in his career and came back from it playing at the same high level as before so I wouldn’t call that injury concerns. Comparable stats to Orpik over the last few years aside from last years injury and only making $100 000 more/year. Hamhuis is at 4.5M because of an offensive upside. I think this is the first good move Gauthier has made as the GM.

Overpriced for an own-zone guy – or at least an own-zone guy who isn’t absolutely fantastic at it, like Dan Hamhuis or Brooks Orpik. Doubly so with injury concerns. But this is hardly Gauthier’s first dicey move as GM, is it?
