Funny anecdote about the Smith-Gretzky incident. Like Westfall, Smith was convinced that 99 had committed a dive to draw the major. To even matters, he waited until Game 4 when the Isles were leading 3-2 and the Oilers were desperately trying to stave off elimination in the late 3rd period.

Billy was being pelted with shots when–I think it was Anderson made contact with him and Billy went down like he had been shot. To Anderson’s disgust, Billy drew a major.

Later, as Ziegler was waiting to award Smith his Conn Smythe, Smith freely admitted to an HNiC interviewer on camera and right in front of Ziegler that it was a dive in retaliation for Gretzky’s. The look on Ziegler’s face? Priceless!

I love how the announcer in the Philly game predicted Hextall scoring “one of these days” literally five seconds before he did it.
