PHT Morning Skate: Ron Wilson overreaction edition

Dec 26, 2011, 7:20 AM EDT

Ron Wilson AP

PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

Mike Zeisberger has a great take on how Ron Wilson’s Christmas contract extension puts Brian Burke’s neck on the line as well. (Toronto Sun)

Meanwhile, Terry Koshan says that Wilson’s extension is “just plain wrong.” Harsh truth? (Toronto Sun)

Faceoffs get no respect. No respect I tell ya! (Sun-Sentinel)

The Canadiens are in their worst stretch of losing since they traded Patrick Roy away in 1995. They’d better hope Carey Price doesn’t vow to never play for them ever again. (Montreal Gazette)

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can’t wait to play in front of his folks at home in Vancouver. Just wait til Alex Burrows greets him with a face full of his glove as a “welcome home” gift. (Edmonton Journal)

They’re campaigning for Daniel Alfredsson to be one of the captains at the All-Star Game in Ottawa. If ever there was a sure thing to bet your life savings on, this is it. (Ottawa Sun)

Kudos to Predators agitator Jordin Tootoo on marking one year of sobriety. Here’s to hoping there will be many more. (Tennessean)

The Toronto media is brutal. The only reason they don’t like Burke and Wilson is because they have no influence over them. They’re the first duo that doesn’t make knee-jerk reactions based on what idiots like Damien Cox and this guy from The Sun think. Glad to see Burkie and Wilson will be here giving the media fits for years to come.

Yup, they do not understand how much worse it could be.

Who exactly does these morons want instead?

I love Burke. He’s fantastic, and I want him here for the long haul. I like Wilson’s attitude, but I’m really not sure about him as a coach given his total lack of results in Toronto so far. Last year should’ve been better than it was, it really should’ve, and though no small part of that is on players underperforming… well, it’s on him too. I wasn’t necessarily calling for his sacking, but I’m disappointed Burkie didn’t just wait the season out. It’s not like he couldn’t have extended him AFTER he had proven himself by getting the Leafs back in the playoffs. He didn’t have to do it now, and I’m worried that might bite him. And the Leafs as a whole.

If it works, fantastic. I love Wilson’s bitch-slaps to the Toronto media. But I love Leafs wins more, and if he’s not the best man for the job… well, it’s too late to back out now, isn’t it?
