Cody McLeod checks Jared Spurgeon from behind

Dec 26, 2011, 8:26 PM EST

It didn’t take long for our first controversial hit after the holiday break. In fact, it happened in the first game.

The Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild started Monday’s action, which included the hit (via @cjzero) below. Cody McLeod was tossed from the contest after a check from behind on Jared Spurgeon.

McLeod received a five-minute major and game misconduct for the hit. Should he face a suspension as well, just a fine or nothing more?

Lucic got a game for far less. But everyone knows that was a makeup call. But Shanahan has to give at least a game for that hit which is far more vicious than the Lucic hit.

Mark Rycroft had an interesting point on the Colorado feed during intermission…Spurgeon turned on / locked up his skates strangely, McLeod actually was trying to make a clean hit, and it was alot dirtier than Mac orginally intented.
Nonetheless, Cody probably will get Shanabanned.

Hate to see that happen to Jared. Hope he’ll be OK. One of Garth’s few mistakes was letting him go.
