Best 10 NHL moments of the year: Burrows buries the ‘Hawks

Dec 25, 2011, 12:00 PM EDT

Merry Christmas, everyone. Since we can’t buy all our readers an iPad2, we’ve put together a list of the best 10 NHL moments of the past year that we’ll be rolling out on the site all day long.

Burrows buries the ‘Hawks

In an opening playoff round filled with drama — 14 overtime contests, four series going to Game 7 — nothing was more compelling than Vancouver vs. Chicago. The Canucks raced out to a 3-0 series lead on their bitter rivals, only for the ‘Hawks to furiously rally and force Game 7. It was only the seventh time in NHL history a team forced a seventh game after trailing 3–0 in a playoff series…and what a Game 7 it was.

I still get goosebumps watching that. That series seemed to have a bit of everything.

Highlight-reel goals, overwhelmingly dominant offense from two of the best attacking teams in the game, hard hitting, baffling saves, consecutive Luongo blowouts… yeah, pretty much everything you’d expect. =D

He also became a father that night.

Happiest moment of the cup run for Canucks fans, along with Burrows’ OT wraparound against Chara and Thomas being a close second.

Man, you can hate the ‘Nucks, you can hate Alex Burrows, but holy shit, was that a goal. I’ve only seen a couple of series end in more spectacular manners than that. The whole game was dead even, great scoring chances, defensive plays and saves from both sides… and then that goal to seal it in overtime. And what a way to do it. Man, that was a game.

I’ll bet the Hockey Gods decided since Vancouver wanted to have their Stanley Cup celebration after winning a first round series that they didn’t need a another one…..

Wish the Canucks would have won it all last season.

It was just a great series, and Sharp could have finished it for the Hawks in OT. Still hard to believe that the Canucks blew a 3-0 series lead.
