Do you honestly believe anything you just wrote? Engelland jumped, Foligno delivered a solid hit. Big difference. This was also not anywhere near being a head shot and those who agree with that are not anywhere near being morons. Hits like this used to be perfectly legit but now every time people see a big hit, even a clean one, they start thinking suspension. It’s really unfortunate what the sport’s becoming.

It wasn’t meant to injure, but it was meant to be a big hit. There’s not too many different ways that can come out when you’re coming down to hit a guy circling from behind the net. The only issue I have is Foligno has been on the edge with a number of hits lately – albeit on the right side. I think Shanahan will want to speak with him but nothing will come of it as the on-ice penalty was more than enough.

Foligno has become a real punk…This hit was meant to injure..Guys like Foligno are trying to press the envelope with hits like this…anyone who condones a hit like this or even the hit the other night by Deryk Engelland is a moron..Someone is going to get hurt really bad with these head shots…Will it take someone being paralyzed or worse, to wake you people up! Matt Cook has proven this year that if you have talent, you do not need to play like a moron.. Another guy that is going to get caught is P.K. SUBBAN , he has a nasty habit of kicking other players in the back of the legs with his skates…he is really going to hurt someone worse than he hurt Jordan Staal…Hockey and the powers to be need to wake up

It’s a tough call. I mean, on the actual contact I don’t see anything too far out of line and Ellerby sets himself up for it – you can’t fly through behind the net like that without being aware of your surroundings.

At the same time Foligno came all the way down from the top of the circle (from the replay, he could have started at the blue line for all I can tell here) so I guess you can interpret that as charging.

Bottom line is that we see a player with a reputation for borderline hits getting a major penalty for skating most of the way across the zone and making a huge (and even bigger looking) hit on a vulnerable player. Raffi Torres got penalized and suspended for stuff like this last year, that’s for sure.

Was it technically that bad? Not really. But in a game that is simply moving too fast for the refs these days, you are going to see guesswork like this – and based on the distance Foligno traveled, based on him leaving his skates in a spectacular fashion, based on Ellerby hitting the ice like a ton of bricks and most importantly based on Foligno’s reputation I can see exactly why he was assessed this penalty.

I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying it seems to be how it works now.

Ellerby blows a tire and is falling down as Foligno hits him. No way that’s a penalty and sure as heck is not a suspension. It looked WAY worse than it was because Foligno went over Ellerby rather flamboyantly and both players ended up on the ice.

I agree with you on that one. I watched this many times and I just cant say that Foligno tried to injure here. He may have made some contact with the head, but as Shanahan has said, if the “hitee” changes postions right before the hit, that’s not always possible to avoid. I think the officials saw/heard a big collision and assumed it was malicious.

This idea that the sport needs to change to suit fair-weather fans is infuriating!!! This is hockey, not football. So even the Stars will get hit unlike a QB who can slide for protection!!! I wish the fancy lads would quietly enjoy the sport or move on. I would rather return hockey back a little and pay to watch it instead of making it a network friendly sport!!!

I don’t see any intent to injure here. I see a guy looking to lay a big hit on an opponent who has left himself open to one. I remember the days when that used to be tolerated in hockey.

I’m not sure he even deserved the 5 and a game here. The NHL is starting to look like the World Juniors where players are getting penalized and ejected based on the noise their hit makes even if its clean or only worth a minor.

Foligno is building a resume, unfortunately for him it’s for borderline hits.

He gets at least a call. A suspension based on track record wouldn’t be entirely surprising.

There’s a point where he has to admit that he’s playing very close to the edge and needs to deliver safer checks or face a full Shana-ban.

There was a clear intent to injure on that play. Ellerby was just able to minimize impact before Foligno made contact. If Ellerby didn’t pick his head up and see Foligno throw his body at him, he would’ve been taken off on a stretcher.
