The Gomez trade was Bob Gainey's move. At the time it was a bad trade, and somehow over time it has proven to be worse than just bad. I was not a fan of the backdoor way Gauthier was given the team, and from the beginning he was a bad pick to run the Canadiens.

Really, this team needed to be rebuilt years ago. They have great young pieces in Pacioretty, Subban, and Price, but they need more than that to build for the future. At this point, players like Gionta, Camalleri, Plekanec, Gorges could fetch good returns. Looming UFA's like Moen could garner a draft pick of some sort. They have the ability to rebuild in Montreal, but Gauthier should not be the person to do it.

If I was ownership I would fire him before the trade deadline, before he can make more desperate moves which will hurt this team years down the road.

And Kaberle. Also not meeting Streit's desired salary (which turned out to be a hell of a bargain for what he does for the Isle). Oh, and signing a new contract with Markov despite all signs pointing to him never playing more than half a season again. And that was at the time of signing. NOW they'd count themselves lucky if he ever actually PLAYS. Cammalleri I'll admit was a legitimate case of the "Good idea at the time" logic, but that's one for five of the listed names (including Gomez, obviously).

So, no, Gomez wasn't his only magnificent fuckup.

I don't know about Gauthier being fired. Everybody seemed to be fine with his signings and trades when they first occurred, has a goalie for the future in Price, and his draft picks are for the most part decent. The only real bad flaw to Gauthier is his signing Gomez. Other than that, I think this is all Martin and his stifling system. I think this is just a transition period with Montreal for their new coach.
