Doc Emrick talks Winter Classic, Flyers-Rangers rivalry

Dec 21, 2011, 3:45 PM EDT

Earlier today, the NBC Sports Group and NHL held a press event at 30 Rockefeller Plaza to celebrate the fifth year of the NHL Winter Classic. Those in attendance included host Liam McHugh, former New York Ranger Adam Graves, Winter Classic host Bob Costas and of course, NHL lead play-by-play commentator Mike “Doc” Emrick.

And we’ve got the video!

Here’s Doc talking about the longstanding rivalry between the Flyers and Rangers and how he expects it to play out on Jan. 2:

This will be Emrick’s third straight Winter Classic — all told, he’ll have worked four of the five in league history. The only one he missed was the 2009 edition between Detroit and Chicago, because he’d come down with laryngitis. Versus’ Dave Strader filled in (of note, Strader also called the 2011 Heritage Classic from Calgary.)

i bet he’s looking forward to the “DRIIIIIVE” down to the game and probably hopes the Rangers “cancel out” the Flyers.

i like Emrick don’t get me wrong.. but his choice of words could be better i think. we are watching hockey after all and not Golf while doing mathematic equations.

Dude Doc Emerick is the best in the game. I have struggled through, Bob Cole, and Jim Hughson for long enough on CBC to know that this guy does a great job. He is truly excited and shows it in his broadcasts.

Furthermore, i cannot wait for 24/7 tonight. I’m really hoping that 6-0 shalacking at the hands of the Bruins makes it on the Philly parts.

I cannot stand his voice. And is he actually a Doctor? Or is he padding his resume? Can someone look in to that. People call me Doctor for a reason.

I’ll take Mike DOC Emrick any day.
Having watched the great sport of hockey try to take a piece of the national spotlight and compete with the other big league sports (MLB, NFL, NBA) while suffering through horrible TV broadcasters who have no business calling the game let alone being at the rink. I’ll take Doc any day.
Bob Costas? Costas knows baseball and……Well he knows baseball. Someone probably has to explain what a blue line and a cross check are to that guy.
