Phone hearing scheduled for Lucic

Dec 18, 2011, 1:25 PM EDT

Boston forward Milan Lucic will have a phone chit-chat tomorrow with league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. The topic of conversation: Is there anything more the NHL can do for the Bruins?

We kid, we kid – it’s actually to discuss Lucic’s hit from behind on Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo during yesterday’s 6-0 Boston victory. (The other call is scheduled for Wednesday.)

At 16:21 of the second period, Lucic received a five-minute major and game misconduct after checking Ronaldo between the numbers and into the boards. At the time, the B’s were up big, 5-0, on the Flyers.

Clearly Rinaldo wasn’t injured on the play, as he was able to get up and beat the stuffing out of Nathan Horton.

Lucic didn’t think what he did was so bad, as reported by the Boston Herald.

“I felt like I made every effort to take him out laterally and looked at the video and slow-mo’d it and looked at the point of contact, and there were no numbers. It was all shoulders,” Lucic said. “You can see even him, his body rotating because I took him from the right side.”

B’s coach Claude Julien agreed, saying, “[Lucic] let up and a player turned at the last second. It didn’t appear to be a hit from behind.”

Lucic has been suspended before – he received a one-game ban for crosschecking Maxim Lapierre, then with Montreal, during the 2009 playoffs.

Jason, you have no shame in your Bruins attacks. You’re upset by the Lucic hit on Miller. Get over it already.

    • Jason Brough - Dec 18, 2011 at 1:38 PM

      Lighten up.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 3:32 PM

He said nothing of the kind.

    • imleftcoast - Dec 18, 2011 at 11:58 PM

Lucic won’t fight. Total f’ing pussy.

  2. goalie007 - Dec 18, 2011 at 1:48 PM

Lucic is an over-rated goon. The hit on Ryan Miller was a cheap shot and an obvious intent to injure. The hit on Rinaldo was stupid. Lucic has some ability, but very little hockey sense.

    • titknocker - Dec 18, 2011 at 2:45 PM

an overrated goon who can score and beat the crap out of people that every team in the league would want a guy like lucic.

    • titknocker - Dec 18, 2011 at 2:45 PM

and the hit on miller wasn’t cheap. miller never should of been that far out of the net. you go that far you should be able to get hit imo

      Go Bruins!!

      • elvispocomo - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:34 PM

Well, “in your opinion” and “in the rulebook” are two different things. He’s a goalie, and as such he’s protected from being bodychecked anywhere on the ice.

Let me put it this way: did Lucic have more or less time to react to Rinaldo finally turning so his numbers weren’t directly facing Lucic than he did to see Miller was going to beat him to the puck?

The answer is this: he had plenty of time to see Rinaldo’s numbers but no time to start a hit by the time he turned (meaning he was already in motion to hit him) and yet Lucic had plenty of time to see that Miller was coming out of the net and might beat him to the puck.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 3:33 PM

People are still parroting Lindy’s falsehoods, I see.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 3:35 PM

I wonder if this is the same goalie I saw on ESPN who didn’t know the rules for his own position.

  3. elvispocomo - Dec 18, 2011 at 2:36 PM

I don’t know how he doesn’t see Rinaldo’s numbers facing him the whole way in. At best, Rinaldo turns slight just prior to the hit, but Lucic is well on his way to a hit from behind at that point. I certainly don’t see how he lets up – does Lucic think not throwing every extra effort into a player he’s going to hit from behind is the definition of letting up?

  4. drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 3:34 PM

Rinaldo starts to turn up ice when the hit comes in. He doesn’t finish the turn–personally, I think Lucic deserves a game off because the hit was a bit reckless.

  5. pastabelly - Dec 18, 2011 at 3:58 PM

    Keep whining Jason.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 4:14 PM

      How’s he whining?

      • danphipps01 - Dec 19, 2011 at 12:14 AM

Implying the Bruins aren’t angels, as best as I can figure. =/

  6. pastabelly - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:05 PM

Vancouver guy keeps complaining about how rough the Bruins are and how much they get away with. He never seemed to want to end his Lucic-Miller posts.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Show them to me, and we’ll see.

    • haterzgonahate - Dec 19, 2011 at 2:51 PM

Vancouer guy probably loves Lucic.. as do most Vancouver guys… seeing as he’s from Vancouver and all… and he led the Vancouver Giants to a memorial cup

just wanted to say it one more time

  7. drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:47 PM

Hard to listen to a Vancouver guy on dirty play since the Canucks have Alex The Chomper.

    • loinstache - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:57 PM

…are you using multiple accounts to troll? Your posts in this thread are clearly contradictory.

      • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:59 PM

Eh? No…not sure what you’re talking about.

      • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:59 PM

I’m a bit drunk, that might account for it…

  8. carol6645 - Dec 18, 2011 at 5:53 PM

Lucic isn’t far from a rocking chair wondering what in the world hockey is?!
He’s been hit in the head so many times “concussion” is his middle name.
He may dish them out but he’s been among the walking dead–brainless.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 18, 2011 at 6:00 PM

      When? Where?

  9. Jason Brough - Dec 18, 2011 at 6:14 PM

For those of you that think I’m biased against the B’s because they beat the Canucks, please read my answer to Question No. 2.

    • elvispocomo - Dec 18, 2011 at 7:45 PM

Not that any Nucks fan can really feel happy about liking the Bruins (I’d predicted a B’s and C’s final at the start of the season and the B’s were my #2 team behind Vancouver watching Bourque play growing up), but no one can honestly say you’ve been biased against them.

    • pastabelly - Dec 19, 2011 at 2:58 PM

Okay Jason, not sure you’re still reading this thread, but I will take back my remarks about your going at the Bruins because you’re from Vancouver. I think you overdid a bit on the Lucic-Miller non-suspension. On this one, Rinaldo doesn’t even think Lucic should be suspended. But I think Shanahan will suspend him because the press (and I’ll include bloggers like you) keep writing that the Bruins get some sort of preferential treatment.

  10. foodforthesoul28 - Dec 18, 2011 at 8:39 PM

If he gets suspended…so be it, if he doesn’t get suspended….so be it. No matter what, it’s out of our hands so lets all stop pretending that we are the Leagues Disciplinarian!

  11. donfocker89 - Dec 18, 2011 at 9:49 PM

Same story and same ending. No suspension. I believe he wont not because the Bruins have been the center of attention of a lot of these and avoid suspensions this year, but because I saw Phaneuff bury Kassian harder than what Lucic did here. And I’m pretty sure there was no suspension there (correct me if I’m wrong).

And lets clear some things up here for fans of certain teams.
Bruins – yes, you won the cup. Congrats on being a good team. But enough with all these questionable calls. Yes you hit hard and play hard but there are things you do is wrong. Also stop telling sabres fans to quit whinning because the hit on miller was in fact dirty. enough with the playing the puck excuse. Of course I still blame the league for not dishing out suspensions to any Bruins because they have been the center of attention for these A LOT. Show em you mean business with one and things will slow down.
Canucks – you got beat, yes Marchand used Sedin like a little punching bag but you let him get away with it too. The biting was weak and whats worse is probably spitting in someones face. Get over the loss and man up for once. Boston has fun with you guys because they forced you into a riot.
Sabres – I agree there should have been a suspension (I mean he broke the rules for crying out loud). But quit whinning about it. Miller is a puss and overrated. Stop crying because its out of your hands. Our team has a bunch of nancy’s (Yes “our” I’m a Sabres fan.)

  12. carol6645 - Dec 18, 2011 at 10:31 PM

Lucic may SEEM to get away with his fighting and hard hits but is it entirely possible he is tearing himself apart every time he gets his face rearranged and his brains knocked senseless? Don’t be stupid! Look at the hits he takes.
He may be a golden boy to Shanahan and of course you Bruin’s fans, but the real penalty will be the damage Lucic is doing to himself in the process! Wake up and face facts! Watch the pounding he takes for every hit he dishes out. Are you stupid enough to really think his brain hasn’t been jarred a few too many times?

  13. crusty14 - Dec 18, 2011 at 11:06 PM

Carol , your comments are ridiculous! You obviously have never played the game and you have no idea what you are talking about. To my knowledge, lucic has never been concussed, so please stop worrying about his long term health. Yes Milan does fight on occasion , but nothing like guys such as shulz, jonathon, semenko, etc did, and none of those old timers are suffering, so please keep your inane comments to yourself!

  14. carol6645 - Dec 19, 2011 at 3:58 AM

Me! Worrying about Lucic?? And he rarely fights? Where have you been all your life?

  15. crusty14 - Dec 19, 2011 at 7:53 AM

I’ve been playing and watching hockey all my life. I don’t have the exact stats, but my guess is that Lucic averages 6-8 fights over an 82 game season , plus playoffs. That can hardly be considered fighting ” all the time” . Dave Shulz of the 70-80 flyers probably averaged 30 fights a season!

  16. mornelithe - Dec 19, 2011 at 1:58 PM

Go ahead, suspend Lucic for a game….not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things. Chara was out 2 games and the B’s still won. You’d need to suspend Thomas, Rask, and Lucic to make any significant impact.

    • donfocker89 - Dec 19, 2011 at 5:19 PM

They aren’t suspending your precious Bruins so they “might” lose a game or two. They do it because its illegal (even though I disagree with this move too). Its not like I was cursing Shanny for putting the banny on Villeo Leino and blame the loss on that……Even though Leino sucks this year.
