I've said all along get rid of the trapezoid, let the goalies play the puck, but they are fair game when they leave the crease. goalies playing the puck may save some defensemen getting pounded and the fair game part will keep goalies fromtaking it too far.

This really is an abominable call. Charging? If the goalie is 20 ft out of the crease what in the heck is the forward to do? Stop and wait for him to clear and skate back to the cage before following through?
This crap has got to stop now.

Two words: Bull and Sh*t.... I am an avowed Blue-shirt hater, but this is CRAP! How is this a penalty and what Lucic did to Miller not????? Hagelin made the effort to stop his forward motion and avoid contact with the 'keeper. If Shanahan gets involved with this, then this really is a crock of crapola. Torts is fully within his rights for losing his mind on this one.....

As a life long Flyers fan, and thereby Rangers hater, I have to say, this was a terrible call. Even if you ignore everything else, Hagelin got to the puck first. If he gets to the puck before the goalie, it's his puck, which makes any charging call irrelivant (similar to a defenseman that dives to break up a play. He knocks the guy off his feet, but it's not a penalty if he gets the puck first). Terrible call all the way around. I just hope it didn't lead to a game changing PP goal

As far as goalies go, IMO, they SHOULD get special protection behind the net. Although even then it should not be something they go overboard with. If they come out in front of their net, they should have to take whatever hits any other player would have to take.

exactly what i thought would happen after all the huffing and puffing over the miller-lucic incident. goalies outside the crease are now defenders that you can't touch - and when they check you, you get called for a penalty.

hagelin got to the puck. bachman initiates contact. hagelin gets a penalty. makes perfect sense to me!

props to tortorella.

i still do not understand why coaches and managers don't instruct their goalies to stay in the freaking net and try and make the save in those situations.

Completely agree. Continued shoddy workmanship from the NHL Refereeing Crew. I understand they work a thankless job, but they get paid to do it properly, and we should expect nothing less than that from them. The sad truth is, it seems many of the Referees are carrying that chip on the shoulder, the one with the "I couldn't hack it in the NHL" label.

Well first of all that was such a BS call its not even funny. Hagelin was simply playing the puck, and he made a very good effort to avoid contact with the goalie. It was Bachman who skated right into him in fact, and its not like the ref was at center ice and made the call... he was standing 15 feet from the play with a perfect view. Simply awful. It is however going to be really awsome if 24/7 shows Tort's reaction in its full uncensored glory (and a very justifiable reaction at that). I might have a lot of issues with the way he has coached the Rangers the last couple years.... but at least Torts is great from an entertainment value standpoint.

Side Note: Its plays like this that make me argue that goalies should not have any special protection once they advance forward from the crease to play the puck. If they want to get into a foot race with a player 20 feet from the net, said player should not be forced to avoid any and all contact with a goalie whos that far out of the net.
