Adam McQuaid will likely hear from NHL for knee-to-knee

Dec 14, 2011, 10:52 PM EDT

Kevin Porter received a four-game suspension for a knee-to-knee hit on David Booth. Keep that in mind when you check out this clip, as Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid might face similar discipline for this check on Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno. (One difference that shouldn’t matter in punishments but just might: Foligno returned to the game.)

McQuaid received a five minute kneeing major and a game misconduct on the play, which provides another difference from the Porter situation. (Porter received a two-minute kneeing penalty.)

So yes, there are some contextual differences, but both are knee-to-knee hits. So what do you think, does McQuaid deserve a suspension? If so, should he sit out less time, more or the same? Share your thoughts in the comments.

It’s an ugly check. Like the Porter hit on Booth, it’s not a vicious intent to injure, but it’s a still a very dangerous play. He’s beat on the play and hangs the knee out there in a lazy or desperate move. Either way, I doubt it’s a play that McQuaid could defend as anything other than a really bad split second decision.

BTW, let’s keep in mind why the reaction to these knee-on-knee hits is usually severe: it ends careers.

Remember what happened to Cam Neely? That’s why Shanahan must take a hardline on such plays. It’s not even about intent, but rather the shear danger of catastrophic injuries due to such poor decisions.

Agreed. Bruins fan, and he needs to be suspended for a while.

Another Bruins fan here and I was thinking of Cam Neely as well. Don’t think he was trying to hurt but you can’t have the shit in the game. Again, I’m a Bruins fan but he has to be suspended.

Well, Adam ‘Studio’ McQuaid didn’t intend to injure Foligno. I guess he’ll get a few games though. Jaffe doesn’t think it will be too severe.

He plays for Boston. He won’t get suspended.

Yeah, yeah. The moon landing was faked and Bush did 9/11, we know.

As a player you are responsible for your stick, skates and your body. No excuses. He got tossed and he deserved it. If he gets suspended then he deserves that as well. Fortunately, and this is by no means diminishing what happened, Foligno was not severely injured.

I’d like to believe he was pivoting the knee to turn around as opposed to intentionally nailing Foligno.

He deserves to sit a few games……Guess this will expedite Chara’s return to the ice
