There’s something fairly stupid about people screaming for suspensions when if he’d just dropped his gloves and punched him it’d all be fine.

As a Flyers fan I hate how people say they are dirty. Yes they lead the league in penalties, but it is mostly lazy- hook or hold penalties. I don’t think Malkin should be suspended for intent. He and Giroux were sparring on the way up the ice, then he missed on his cheapshot attempt. Shannahan should call him and tell him any further crap like this and he’ll sit, but as far as this one- no harm no foul.

The league, even before Shanny, didn’t really seem to have a problem suspending Ovechkin – and it’s not like Ovechkin’s some 4th liner on a bottom-dwelling team.

It looks like he’s changed his game… and perhaps his attitude… from past seasons, and he’s become a better player for it. After his last suspension, I was hoping that the Penguins would just cut him loose and wash their hands of him – but I guess that’s why I’m not a GM.

Neither Letang or Cooke are superstars. Letang is a very good offensive D-man. But that’s it’s. If the NHL suspends Malkin, then you will know that they are serious about player safety.

already lost Letang for two games for a pretty tic tacky boarding call, while cooke was given a headshot and the hit wasn’t even looked at. nice try though, i see what you did there…

fair is fair though, Malkin should miss a game like Leino. Seems like that could send a positive message that even stars are going to be suspended if they play recklessly… it’d be nice if it was always consistent though. With shanaban super slo mo video, and detailed youtube explanations, there should never be a suspendable play go without being reprimanded.

I’m pretty sure that fight happened because the Red Wings were busy handing the Penguins their asses in that game (a 5-0 score). Doesn’t justify the fight, but I think it did help swing the momentum of the series.

The history of a team does not mean that they ‘have it coming to them’. I hate the Flyers just as much as any Penguin fan, but hey – you don’t go throwing elbows at guys’ heads, and I don’t care what uniform you wear (or what the name is on the back of that uniform).

If Malkin wanted to get back at Giroux or the rest of the Flyers, he should have played much better than he did. That’s all there is to it.

Also, the argument that league is ‘protecting’ certain teams and/or players has been old for quite a while now. It’s time to give up the conspiracy theory and own up when your favorite players or teams are wrong.

I love people defending this by pointing out the Flyers penchant for questionable hits. As if that has ANY factor in this- it’s okay to try to take a guy’s head off as long as he plays for a team you don’t like? Come on people. If Malkin had raised his elbow like that against someone from a team NOT known for ‘dirty play’, let’s say Datsyuk, does that really make this any different?

He tried to elbow Giroux in the head. It’s the exact kind of thing Shanahan is trying to crack down on- and gave Leino a suspension for an almost identical play just the day before. I don’t care what teams are involved- this is a suspension-worthy play, period.

@Kristenaux- Don’t let your love of the Pen’s cloud your judgement here. Malkin took a blatant cheapshot on Giroux while he was turning and heading to the bench, it was away from the puck and had nothing to do with the flow of play on the ice. Malkin may be a marquee talent in the NHL but he shouldn’t be immune to the punishment that others recieve for the same type of play. And as for protecting the Flyers, both Jody Shelley and Tom Sestito were suspended for dangerous hits, the Flyers are just as liable to be suspended as anyone else.

Wow, what a classless move by Malkin. Thats the kind of thing you expect from a guy like Cooke… not one of the better players in the game. This is even worse then the Leino hit because Giroux didn’t have the puck… in fact the puck isn’t anywhere close to him. Malkin simply went out of his way to try and throw an elbow at the head of a player without the puck… clear intent to injure. There is no “natural reflex” defense to this one.

If the league is serious about getting rid of headshots, especially ones of the intended variety, Malkin should be sitting for 3-5 games at least. If Giroux doesn’t duck this hit, it could have ended his season. The simply fact that he was able to avoid this blatent attempt to injure him should not excuse Malkin for said attempt. Should Malkin go without suspension, and a big one at that, Shanahans credability will be out the window, and it will send the message that intentional head shots are fine if your a star player.

He deserves the suspension and I wouldn’t mind him missing tomorrow night’s tilt at the NVMC to be honest. Taking a broader view, Shanny is trying to change the culture of the NHL and it will not happen overnight. Its a pity this wasn’t done a year or two ago. It was precisely the fact that play like this directed toward the NYI by the Penguins and others was consistently NOT addressed by Coli that led to the infamous “brawlgame”. If this sort of thing isnt addressed in the front office, it will get addressed on the ice and that is not good for the game.

I hate the Flyers, but the current Flyers team isn’t really known for “Splattering blood all over the league”. Not to mention these intentional head shots have only become a really serious thing over the last season or two… and by the book thats a very suspendable play.

And don’t act like the league is simply protecting the Flyers either. I mean, have you seen how many suspensions there have been this year for plays like this? Its just a fluke that two of these happened against the Flyers in back to back games.

When was the last time someone on the Flyers did a headshot with an elbow? Even Richards/Booth was a shoulder, not an elbow. The Pens have had at least three incidents of this dating back to last March (Booth, Kunitz/Gagne, Malkin/Giroux). I don’t live in the PA Market, so these are the only three I know of because they were on national TV. I have no idea how many there actually are. Pens fans claiming the Flyers are dirty need to get past 1975.

True, the player was blindsided, but at least Leino was making a hockey play as the player Leino targeed had the puck and just had gotten rid of it. Giroux didn’t even have the puck and Malkin wasn’t making a “hockey play” by taking a proverbial “brain crap” by randomly swinging at Giroux. Maybe he said something about his mom?

This is different than Leino. Leino’s was blindside and the player was unsuspecting. Malkin and Giroux were going at it up the ice and Giroux fortunately saw this all the way. Fine and talking to maybe, but I do not think this is suspension worthy.

While I’m happy with what Shanny is trying to do in the NHL, eliminating head injury & concussion, I find both these calls for a suspension a bit of overkill? Yes, imo both moves were intentional. And I believe there should be some kind of reprimand. I’m a Pens fan – my favorite players are Malkin & Letang. It was hard for me to watch Geno pull this kind of thing the other night. I am NOT a Flyers fan for obvious reasons but I do like Giroux so this was ‘unpleasant’.

HOWEVER, all that being said, the Flyers have made a career out of splattering blood all over the league. It’s pretty much their modus operandi when hitting the ice. Now all of a sudden, they are lambs needing to be protected? Give me a break Shanny. Might it hasve anything to do with an upcoming Winter Classic & keeping the stars healthy?

This was even more obvious than Leino’s elbow. Giroux didn’t even have the puck. Malkin just wanted to take a cheap shot.

Great bob & weave by Giroux though. Spidey-sense indeed. Shanny should at least give him what he gave Leino.
