Burke “open” to ideas from new owners

Like any savvy employee, Leafs general manager Brian Burke wasted no time buttering up his new corporate overlords today in Toronto.

“I’m perfectly willing to listen to what they have to say,” Burke told reporters, as per the Toronto Sun. “If the new owners have some ideas, as soon as they get control of the team, that’s the first meeting I have.

“Maybe there are things we can do better, from a front office standpoint or a scouting standpoint. I’m open. These are very creative, very bright people.”

Don’t know about you, but I’d pay a lot of money to watch a couple of bean counters from BCE or Rogers walk in to Burke’s office and tell him who they like in the upcoming draft.

Burke also had some kind words for the future former owners, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

“If this deal closes and they move on, I would say thank you for this opportunity to run the Leafs,” he said. “They’ve taken a lot of criticism since before I got here and since and I don’t think that’s warranted. All they’ve tried to do is win.”

That’s all good corporate-speak. Just what the PR flaks want you to say. Now, what is Burke REALLY saying? Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

If they get involved in any way I hope it entails pushing for a boatload of money to be thrown Zach Parise’s way

Was sitting here in Winnipeg last week watching OFF THE RECORD a sports interview show on TSN. Burke was on and having never seen him interviewed before i intently watched as he made viewers across Canada think of him as a complete ahole. More Americanization of the great game. OLD TIME HOCKEY,EDDIE SHORE.

The whole pompous a$$ thing Burke does every time he’s interviewed gives me the impression it’s more for show than anything else. Given how much success he has behind closed doors makes it hard to imagine that’s his authentic personality, because who would want to deal with a guy like that? Lots of GMs certainly seem willing to deal with the Burke we don’t get to see

Burkie’s just a big soft Irishman with a heart of gold. the pompous prick is all show and it works. he know’s what he’s doing.

relax Toronto, and let him work out his agenda. your team will be elite in no time

        Toronto… elite… holy f**k did u just say that?
