Canucks GM: Source of Luongo trade rumor has “zero credibility”

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis was interviewed on Team 1040 radio this morning in Vancouver. (Click here for the audio.)

Not surprisingly, it didn’t take long for Bruce Garrioch’s “the Canucks have dangled Luongo in trade circles” tidbit to come up. When asked to comment on the rumor that was published in last weekend’s Ottawa Sun, Gillis sounded a lot like a guy who doesn’t particularly care for Bruce Garrioch’s work.

“All you have to do is look at the source of that story and you’ll know there’s zero credibility,” said Gillis. “We’re really happy with our goaltending. We have an opportunity to win every night with Cory [Schneider] and with Roberto. “

Gillis also had some strong words for the Colorado Avalanche, specifically with regards to the Avs’ tactics Tuesday night at Rogers Arena.

What kind of tactics was he referring to? Well, according to the Vancouver Sun, Colorado “played a lot like the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup final, hacking, whacking and trying to bully the Canucks. This time, it didn’t work.”

No, it didn’t. The Canucks blew away the Avs, 6-0.

“I don’t know why they wanted to play that way but that’s what they wanted to do,” said Gillis, “and hopefully they’ll do it again, because they’re going to get it handed to them again.”

But wait, didn’t the Bruins successfully bully their way to a championship?

Gillis saw it another way – Vancouver lost the Stanley Cup final because it didn’t take advantage of all the Bruins’ penalties.

“That’s why that series turned out the way it did,” he said.

In the seven games versus Boston, the Canucks went 1-for-33 on the power play. So he’s got a pretty good point.

Um… not that the Bruins DIDN’T essentially hack and whack their way to victory, but he’s talking like they were the only dirty team on the ice. He’s the GM of the VANCOUVER CANUCKS. What the hell else do I even need to say about this?

    • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:30 PM

Downthumbers haven’t heard of Alex Burrows.

      • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:50 PM

Or somehow think that biting someone isn’t dirty. I guess Bergeron was “asking for it”.

      • F4S Leigh - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:58 PM

Actually, when you shove your finger in someone’s mouth… no, it’s not that dirty. Not much else to do, maybe fellate it? Not Burrows’ style, I don’t think.

      • F4S Leigh - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:01 PM

Sorry just to re-phrase: yes, you are “asking for it” when you shove your finger in someone’s mouth. Don Cherry, biggest B’s fan of all time, agreed.

      • WeWantTheCup - Dec 14, 2011 at 11:53 PM

        Yes they have

    • icedtearex - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:33 PM

1 for 33 on the pwrplay against the Bruins. Gillis isnt doing his job. The Sedins should have been traded over the summer. They have always been a second line duo, regardless of their stats.

      • haterzgonahate - Dec 9, 2011 at 5:55 PM

and regardless of the back to back Art Ross trophies and the Hart right? FAIL!

  2. icelovinbrotha215 - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:14 PM

Zero credibility until he gets traded. He is doing his best poker face. Only time will tell.

  3. lpramsden - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:18 PM

I’d love to see some examples of this “dirty play” you accuse the Canucks of. Everyone knows the Bruins are the cheapest, dirtiest team in the NHL. See here for some facts about the B’s and their Cup victory: Bruins – Dirty Team

    • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:31 PM

      Uh, again, Burrows?

You don’t watch the Canucks. You don’t watch the Bruins. GTFO

      • F4S Leigh - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:00 PM

See my comments above. Even if Canucks Nation gives you Burrows, that’s one player vs…. maybe 10? dirty Bruins. Only the truth hurts, my friend.

      • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:06 PM

Oh please. Name one B’s player who has a history of headshots or boardings or deliberate attempts to injure.

  4. frobaggins - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:37 PM

waaaa the bruins are dirty, waaaa dirtiest team in the NHL, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

ipramsden…shut up brah, last i checked, the two dirtiest plays in the stanley cup finals was a blindside headshot to end someones season and then someone biting another player. guess what? canuck players were the ones to do it. so if you’re gonna whine about something six months ago, go cry to your momma and shove your pissy attitude up your ass

    • imleftcoast - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:55 PM

No one else can take it, but somehow Mason Raymond’s broken back isn’t as serious as biting someone’s finger. Rome’s hit wasn’t a blindside headshot. If it were three or four seconds earlier, it would be a solid hockey play.

      • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:32 PM

Supreme foolishness. Three or four seconds is an ETERNITY.

  5. F4S Leigh - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:46 PM

Hmmm – guess you didn’t read the article? Rome hit was neither “blindside” nor a “headshot”, as agreed by NHL; it was just “interference”. As for finger biting… well, it happened, but I do wonder what else one can do when they have a finger shoved in their mouth.

I’m actually not whining – just stating facts. It is what it is, we lost, I just wish I could say “fair and square”. I guess your inability to read is causing some problems.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:33 PM

No, you’re spinning facts to fit your Nuck bias.

  6. frobaggins - Dec 8, 2011 at 5:51 PM

the canucks and their fans are sore losers, hows that for facts

    • haterzgonahate - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:37 PM

are they sore losers? no.. diappointed losers? yes.. and articles like this in all kinds of hockey blogs just give them an opportunity to re-live that disappointment over and over again.. it’s the circle of life in the “new age” of the sports blogging world so deal with it! if Boston had lost we’d probably see the same thing ten fold from the Boston faithful… why you ask? perhaps because Boston’s population is a lot larger than Vancouver’s.. more people… more opinions.

i’m sick of reading these blogs and seeing comments that resort people to school yard antics. grow up people! it’s sports! it is what it is! we hockey fans should be focusing our attention on the shape of the game and how one Gary Bettman has tainted it. how that guy is still in power is ridiculous but heaven forbid i talk about that cause then i’d just be a conspiracy theorist from Vancouver right ? WRONG!
nothing to see here… lets move along shall we?

  7. drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:33 PM

Should have expected blind homers on here. Go trash your city again.

    • haterzgonahate - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:41 PM

BAHAHA!… a riot reference! lol! so original not nearly overplayed! keep it coming!

    • elvispocomo - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:37 PM

That’s ironic considering it’s been said, “There’s no city more riotous than Boston.” And they weren’t all 100+ years ago either.

      2008 after the Celtics won?
2004 after the Red Sox won the ACLS?

      • drewsylvania - Dec 9, 2011 at 1:05 AM

Uh–very little happened after either event. But go ahead and keep inventing things.

  8. sonofsamiam - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:38 PM

The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup. :)

  9. drewsylvania - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:51 PM

News to no one: There are some really dumb homers out there.

  10. xxshookonexx - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:55 PM

That’s “Canada’s official hockey blog” …not Vancouver’s….a whole country is up in arms about the bruins winning….I think it’s time to raise the rent up there

    • F4S Leigh - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:04 PM

Reading comprehension people! “UN”official hockey blog. :)

And don’t worry… most people in Canada hate the Canucks too. It’s alright, we love it.

  11. sonofsamiam - Dec 8, 2011 at 6:57 PM

Gillis blaming the power play translation:

We are front runners that can’t fight through adversity, particularly when ginger spice and baby spice are laying eggs in the most important series of their careers.

    • elvispocomo - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:48 PM

Seems the spice has gone to your brain. If the 1 for 33 powerplay was closer to 8 or 10 for 33, you’re saying it wouldn’t have made any difference? If Vancouver had gone 3 for 4 in any of the losing games, you don’t think that would have changed the momentum for that game?

Add that together with Boston being mostly healthy and Vancouver not and that’s a series Boston might have been lucky to get away with not being swept, or more likely losing in 5. If H Sedin is healthy, Kesler, Hamhuis, Samuelsson – even Edler and Raymond for the final game, that makes a big difference in comparison to Horton out (in place of Savard, so you can’t Boston would have had both if healthy). Drop another D-man due to suspension (4 games in the SCF, unheard of) and Boston has an advantage that only gets amplified when goaltending and offence can’t step up.

Haha all I have to say is you live in America. That means your probably unemployed or a protester occupying (insert shitty city here). The hit on Raymomd was hideous to see. Folded in half and backed into the boards . He wast even in the action. Blah blah burrows is/was lippy and it apparently it’s working cause u fools don’t even play hockey and he has gotten under ur skin. Pretty sad. Anyways, fuck y’all im out to go snowboard on one of my 3 local mountains in beautiful Vancouver. Have fun looking for jobs suckers.

    • drewsylvania - Dec 9, 2011 at 1:08 AM

Hahahaha fuck you. The lack of downthumbs PROVES the idiocy of Vancouver trolls.

      • goatbahhh - Dec 9, 2011 at 1:15 PM

I think you just contradicted Urself. Anyone else know what this clown is trying to say? The only PROOF we have hear is that u should keep that fat thumb of yours off the CAPSLOCK key and stick it up ur ass.

  13. theironsheik - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:07 PM

The Canucks lost in the finals because Luongo folded like a lawn chair.

    • goatbahhh - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:16 PM

Sounds like what happened to ur mom when u were conceived???!!! Zingggggg! Had to do it

  14. sonofsamiam - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:20 PM

Alex Burrows: the poor man’s Brad Marchand

    • WeWantTheCup - Dec 14, 2011 at 11:51 PM

      Slew foot

  15. sonofsamiam - Dec 8, 2011 at 7:55 PM

Henrik Sedin might be the worst captain in the league. It looked like he didn’t care who won the cup. Who is a worse leader than him? Problem for Vancouver is who else can you give it to ? Kesler? Then you have a captain that dives. Such is life.

  16. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Dec 9, 2011 at 12:14 AM

I’ll believe it when the trade deadline comes and he’s still there

  17. rricardinho - Dec 10, 2011 at 7:05 PM

i cant believe i read all of this nonesense

bruins dirtier by far, thomas was amazing, canucks didnt deserve to win
