I love how everyone defends the goalies but when Tom Thomas skates out of the crease and levels a Canuck who’s looking the other way, there isn’t even a penalty….not a fan of either team just sayin’ I think the goaltenders can protect themselves…they are professional athletes……and agree with the post above your an idiot if you don’t see the difference between lucic on miller and tootoo, I totally agree with lucic…goalies want protection stay in the crease or in the trapezoid other than that they should be fair game…after all they have more padding than anybody out there

You immediately resort to calling this guy an idiot and then say Tootoo was forced into the crease while trying to avoid contacting Miller? I think you need to watch the video again and reconsider who the idiot is here. P.S. goalies do play the puck outside the crease every game, but it’s usually when nobody is around and they don’t charge at an oncoming player going full speed

You’re an idiot. Goalies play the puck outside the crease multiple times every game. No one hits them because it’s against the rules and most players in the league have respect for their fellow competitors. Lucic threw a blatant, illegal, avoidable and idiotic hit. Tootoo attempted to avoid the goalie and was forced in towards the crease. The decision to suspend the lesser of the two hits is non-sensical and an awful mistake.

They look but do not see. Miller was in the faceoff circle playing the puck as though he was a defenseman when Lucic hit him. He is playing with fire doing that and deserved to receive a check. In the Nashville situation he was in the goalie crease and deserved protection. Shanahan judged this from an objective viewpoint, not as an rabid hater of the best hockey team in the NHL. The Stanley Cup winning Boston Bruins. The Big Bad Bruins and the Broad Street Bullies play oldtime hockey so get used to it. This is not Pee-Wee.

I still don’t see how he gets two games with a prior history, but Shanahan gave Brendan Smith 5 games plus the remaining 3 preseson games for his first ever offense. We still like you in the D Shanny, but you are really inconsistent with this lately.

Ron Hextal would have went Tim McKracken on Tootoo. I miss watching him play.

Wow Shanahan bores the hell out of me. They should play catchy comical music while showing these videos.

A few serious thoughts though: This still doesnt make sense of why Lucic didnt get suspended. Basically neither Lucic nor Tootoo had an “intent” to hit Miller. It only came down to where was Miller when it happened. Tootoo tried jumping to avoid it, which only had a negative effect, while Lucic braced his arms up to push through Miller. Yet one gets suspended because tootoo is tootoo?

What made Shanahan suspend Tootoo but not Lucic? The NHL wants to protect players from concussions, but not in Lucic’s case because he ASKED him if he meant to hit Miller. I wonder if Colin Cambell asked Chara if he “meant” to put Pacioretty’s face into a turnbuckle. Or maybe its because they’re both Bruins, and Cambell’s son plays on the same team.

Oh well lets just go after repeat offenders. Good thing Matt Cooke hasnt been on the end of these.

Total horseshit. No way Shanahan can explain how this actual hockey play is worse than Lucic’s hit, which was not part of the play given that he stopped and then made a conscious decision to follow. You could see the smoke coming out his ear, which is a clear sign Lucic has dusted off the cobwebs, and is using his brain for a change.

The instigator rule has nothing to do with any of this. If some one runs over your goalie you punch him in the face. Your coach and teammates will be happy to have you serve the game misconduct. I’m sick of this Don Cherry bullshit about the instigator rule. It doesn’t stop fights or protection. It has nothing to do with the situation. No one fought Lucic because Buffalo has no one to fight the big goon as Gaustad proved by getting beat up the next game. This suspension is a farce. The Lucic situation was far worse regardless of where Miller was on the ice.

Agreed. Players who run another team’s goalie should risk eating their next meal through a straw courtesy of one of the goalie’s teammates. The instigator rule is one of the worst things to happen to hockey

How so? Miller was in his crease minding his own business and Tootoo went in looking to run him as hard as he could. Lucic was skating hard for the puck and Miller decided it would be a good idea to challenge him for it half way to the blue line. That’s apples and oranges

-The GM’s reportedly let Shanahan know he made a mistake on Lucic thats why there was a suspension this time.
-Sabre players and Ruff have been quoted saying running goalies is not something they condone or will do. Kassian was quoted saying it’s not a manly thing to do, so I guess that makes Lucic and Toto….

My best advice for players who are having an in person (i realize Tootoo’s was by phone) hearing with Shanahan and the league’s head office is to purchase a Bruins jersey, preferably a Chara or Lucic one, and wear that. This increases the odds significantly that the player would avoid suspension altogether.

Well deserved but very inconsistent on the part of Shanahan. The Lucic hit should have set the precedent. I felt the Sabres should have sent Shanahan a message in the 3rd period in Nashville when the goaltender came out to the blueline to play the puck, he should have been run down on his way back to the net as he was further out of his crease than Miller in the Lucic incident. If these types of play are going to continue where Miller is targeted, I would expect Lindy Ruff to send guys like Cody McCormick head hunting in the opponents crease.

Absurd that Tootoo gets 2 games and Lucic got 2 minutes. Any system that allows for such varying results needs fixing.
