When the Islanders first drafted Matt in the summer of 2009, I was excited by what I read about him in Hockey's Future. He seemed the ideal linemate for JT. I had read that JT was supposed to be another Espo and I thought that Matt and maybe Kyle Okposo could be JT's Cashman and Hodge.

When I broached that idea with one sports writer, he dismissed the possibility, saying that the Islanders would be crazy to put a 9th round pick on a line with their #1 overall. He also rejected the notion that Matt would ever match Cashman's stats. I have been keeping count and, for the record, Matt has 197 goals to go to match Cashman.

A Kings beat writer was even more dismissive. Matt had been given every chance to make the Kings roster by GM Dean Lombardi and had not shown that he could do anything well according to this report. Given Matt's scoring proficiency and the Kings' offensive struggles, Lombardi has undoubtedly had many occasions to regret his decision.

Matt is just one more example (others include Mark Streit, Michael Grabner, PA Parenteau, and Al Montoya) of how Garth Snow steals other GMs lunch money. Yet somehow Garth is dismissed as an incompetent boob by many. Go figure!
