Matt not only leads the NYI in goals by a significant margin but is only 3 off the NHL lead. Pretty good for a former 9th round pick who, I am told, had convinced Dean Lombardi that he had nothing to offer. Another professional sports writer assured me in 2009 that the NYI would be crazy to put said 9th round pick with their newly minted #1 overall pick and that there was no way Moulson could ever match Wayne Cashman’s stats.

If Garth Snow is crazy, its like a fox. He could not have found a more perfect linemate for his #1 overall pick. As for Cashman, Matt needs 197 more goals to catch him. And given LA’s scoring problems, I do hope someone kept Lombardi away from sharp objects last night when the Islanders-Stars highlights flashed across the screen.

Of note, the last time an Islander had a 4 goal night was when Victor Kozlov did it exactly 5 years before at MSG. Helped chase HL in the 1st w/ 4 GA. Also of note, Frans Nielsen and Rick Di Pietro are the only Islanders remaining from that group. It is not impossible that both could be gone by this summer. In Nielsen’s case, it would be because Garth may get offers he cannot refuse if the NYI are out of contention by the deadline and because he has a ton of talent at center. In RDP’s case, itwould be because it is becoming evident that he is no longer an NHL caliber goalie and is holding back the team. Hard to see how the NYI can justify having him on the roster next season.
