People don’t realize that if the Canucks do trade Luongo, it’s not going to be for nothing. Regardless of his playoff struggles, he is still one of the top goalies in the NHL, a 3-time Vezina finalist and a Olympic gold medal winning goalie; he is going to cost more then Tampa Bay’s backup goalie and some picks. If you want to get your hands on a goalie like Luongo, get ready to pony up your top prospect and some picks. If it took Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds to get Mike Richards, who has an almost identical contract, and who, as a center as opposed to a goalie, has less value then Luongo, then it will take at least Connelly and 1st rounder for the Lightning to snatch Luongo, unless they’d be willing to include their own bad contract in the form of Lecavalier and some picks.

actually… the main reason the Canucks have been contenders the past few years IS Luongo… did everyone forget the Cloutier years? they had the West Coast Express line, Sedins, Grit, solid defense and they got nowhere… remember why? Lidstrom scoring from center ice one year, then Minnesota throwing beachballs past him the next year.

Luongo raised this team to greatness like only Kirk McLean and Richard Broduer had previously. is he a complete headcase? or is he just a headcase in Vancouver, or any other hockey crazed market like Toronto or Montreal?

like a plant he needs the right environment to thrive and it seems he can’t take the “heat” in Vancouver… a city who’s media would “eat their own young” to survive. Tampa would be the perfect environment for a “head case” like Luongo to thrive unoticed to the millions

Considering exactly how many goalies in the league have won the Cup since Luongo has been playing for the Canucks and comparing that number to how many goalies are actually playing in the league I find it very hard to understand the rough ride this goalie gets. I’ve seen EVERY goalie, great or not have their meltdowns and that includes PAtrick Roy and Martin Brodeur, both of whom have won AND lost in the playoffs.

It’s also worth considering that the Canucks lost the final because they couldn’t score, not because of Luongo. 8 goals in 7 games will not win you much in this league and were Luongo to have won in game 7 it’s quite likely he would have been a serious contender for the Conn Smythe.

As for his contract affecting his trade value, there are several teams who are finding ways to overpay for marginal players every season just to hit the cap floor. To be able to spend $5.3 million in cap space and spend less REAL money is a very appealing prospect for a lot of teams and will only get more appealing as the contract wears on. I don’t see Luongo or Schneider being moved this season unless the deal is outrageously good.

Just remember this kids, how far did your goalie get in the playoffs last year? Or the year before? Well, If his name isn’t Thomas or Niemmi, he didn’t do any better than Luongo. So shuddup-a-you-face and drop the puck.

If the CBA allowed the Canucks to pick up some of his contract in the next three years, they’d be able to make a deal. He’s a decent goalie who could help a few teams, and a deal would be in everyone’s best interest (particularly mine as a fan who wants to keep watching Schneider in Vcr).

If Columbus or T-Bay did not even consider this, they need new GMs. Luongo is no where near horrible. What you have is a combination of fans hating on the Canucks & their goalie, plus a fan base that is so pissed off over not winning a Cup, they hang the blame on Luongo only, which is patently ridiculous. His contract is not good, but if you can make it work you are getting a damn fine goalie.

You have that right! The best player in the world won gold for us. Miller didn’t like that goal. Probably still has nightmares about it!
Luongo is so inconsistent and an unknown factor. Is he good or is he terrible? I never rest easy with him. Puzzled about Lou.

Massive contract aside, probably a team wanting to get into the playoffs in the first place would be interested in a good regular season goalie, whether or not they flounder in the playoffs. One man’s trash is another’s treasure after all.

I could see a team like Tampa taking a chance on Luongo if his contract expired in a year or two…. but with another 10 years left on it? Not a chance in hell.

Lets face it, Luongo is a solid goalie… but hes the main reason the Canucks haven’t won a cup over the last few years. So who wants to take a chance on a goalie who chokes in the playoffs, is 32 years old, and has TEN years left on his contract? Oh and by the way, hes looked very poor this season… so who knows if hes going to be worth the $5 million cap hit.

Theres just no way his contract will be moved this year… or the next few years for that matter.

Yeah it’s hard to say how that deal would go down. My guess is at least Garon, a couple of picks and/or prospects, and a current 3rd or 4th liner

I can only hope and pray Yzerman would do it. Wonder what they’d have to give up in return, though? I mean, just shuttling Luongo’s cap hit out of town would be an improvement for Vancouver, but trades tend to involve players in both directions. They wouldn’t want Roli, obviously. I guess Biron and something? Hell, would they even want Biron? They’ve got Lack, after all.

“Decide for yourself how much credence to lend to this particular rumor.” None. It wouldn’t be crazy for Schneider to sign a one-year deal either to wait to become a UFA or for the CBA to allow teams to pay some of the traded players salary. It’s a bit of a leap, but it may be how this actually plays out.

It would be great if they could move Luongo. Schneider is ready to be a starter and with Eddie Lack coming up they are fine in net. As far as Luongo struggling in the playoffs…yes he did struggle in a few games in round 1 and a few in round 4. He was pretty solid the rest of it. The series against boston can not be fully put on Luongo. He still had 2 shutouts in the final series. It is hard to win when you can’t score. Luongos playoff stats

Idky he wouldn’t be trade bait. He is serviceable and can help a team make a deep playoff run. I think the contract would be the reason why he won’t be traded. Yes, he has struggled down the stretch during the playoffs but money may be the ultimate factor.

Will this guy win you a Cup? No. He may get you to the finals, but he won’t win the Cup. He’s a head-case. If it weren’t for his inflated contract, I’d almost feel bad for him. If you think differently, I simply ask – were you watching the finals last year?

Having said that, they could trade him. Do what the Red Sox do when they make one of their boneheaded deals – eat a couple of million per year of the contract (I’m assuming the rules allow for it). He might make sense as a three million dollar man for team that really needs a quality backstopper. Two million a year to unload him might be worth it for the Nucks. It’s the price you pay for stupidity.

Who would trade for a goalie who struggles in the playoffs and has a massive contract? He may earn minimum salary the last few years of his deal but the cap number remains the same throughout does it not?

In the next CBA teams should be able to eat a little bit of money, but Bettman is very much against these long “cap avoiding” contracts, I could see him lobbying against an amnesty clause just to stick it to the Devils and Canucks and every other team that tried to circumvent the cap this way.

You’d think the DiPietro deal would never happen again. The greaseball got his millions and the Canucks are stuck with this headcase. Nobody in their right mind would trade for this guy with his inflated contract.
