PHT’s Morning Skate: Realignment, enforcers, and diving

PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

Looks like the Flyers could have injury problems on the blueline. No, we’re not talking about Pronger either. (CSN Philly)

Speaking of the Flyers, are they a team that has a reputation for diving? Bruce Boudreau thinks so. (OC Register)

The enforcer role is slowly being fazed out of NHL rosters. Adrian Dater thinks that’s a step in the right direction. (Denver Post)

John Branch takes a look back at Derek Boogaard and the life and death of an enforcer. (New York Times)

Todd McLennan planned on giving the Sharks a day off on Sunday. But after their lackluster effort against the Panthers, that went out the window. (Mercury News)

Do you want to know if the Detroit Red Wings may end up in the Eastern Conference? Could the Dallas Stars end up in the “Howe Division?” Here’s what realignment could look like. (Star-Ledger)

Is 20-year-old, Tampa defenseman Victor Hedman worth $20 million? Absolutely. (Tampa Tribune)

It’s going to take time, but the Capitals are already starting to show some signs that they are acclimating themselves to Dale Hunter’s style of play. (Kings of Leonsis)

We’re hearing plenty about The Nuge in the early going this year. But No. 2 overall pick Gabriel Landeskog hasn’t disappointed either. (Backhand Shelf)

It’s no secret that the Kings are struggling to score goals these days. But is that the coach’s fault or should the blame be directed towards players? (Surly & Scribe)

The last time we saw Ryan Miller in the net, he was getting hit by an opponent and trying to figure out what was going on while his teammates sat idly on the sidelines. On Saturday night, the Sabres proved that they learned their lesson. Check out the video:

The actions of the Sabres in that video are a disgrace. First of all, it’s their player who shoves Tootoo into Miller, then they all pile on a defenceless guy on his back.

That would happen anywhere for any teams goalie, except Buffalo against Boston. It looks like the Sabres read the articles about them after Millers concussion

Pretty sure that was the proper reaction. Tootoo doesn’t exactly have the best reputation around the league. Miller’s first game back and this happens, you’re correct. Poor Defenseless Tootoo, one of the class acts of the league getting punched a few times after running at Ryan Miller in his first game back. Disgusting.

That’s the reaction the Sabres should have made LAST time…

This situation though is very different- Miller was in his crease, Tootoo didn’t have the puck- and what’s with the flying leap at Miller anyway? Not sure what that was about, but I agree with the announcers in saying that Tootoo should be suspended for that. I’d call it clear intent to slam into a goalie while he’s in his crease, and it appears he intended to injure him (to me). Hopefully Shanahan agrees.

The realignment scheme makes perfect sense, but the conference/division names don’t. Just bring back the Campbell (West) and Prince of Wales (East) conferences, and the Patrick (Bossy), Adams (Orr), Norris (Howe) and Smythe (Gretzky) divisions, and it’s golden.

Anybody who doesn’t see Toto’s shot as a total cheap shot doesn’t know the game. This was a calculated effort to stir up his team and the fans. If he didn’t want to hit Miller why didn’t he lead with his hands out, why were his elbows leading? Any push to him was directed behind the net, not into the goalie.

I don’t think you will see a decline in enforcers in the league if this crap keeps up. I actually think it’s time the Sabre’s bring one back, it looks like Gaustad got hurt during this scrum.

I’m not a fan of Tootoo but some of you people and your comments are a joke. Talking about how you “know” the game so well Bill??? You’re the biggest moron on PHT and right now you’re embarrassing yourself. Such a pathetic mess

    • billsin20xx - Dec 5, 2011 at 7:36 PM

talking about embarrassing yourself, assuming you are a canucks rioter – er I mean fan- you must be real proud of them running two of the falmes goalies last night – class act team!

Those commentators are painful to listen to. Total chicken-sh*t play by Tootoo though
