Mind you, they made their bed on this one when they signed him through to 2014 in spite of a long-term injury. They HAVE to keep trying to make something work here. I mean, they signed the new contract at the end of last year - nevermind the fact that he missed nearly the whole thing. To say "enough is enough" six months after committing to the long haul would light a fire under a lot of fans' asses. Montreal's not exactly a forgiving city. This was a managerial blunder from the outset, but openly admitting it now, in the middle of a slumping, unimpressive season... probably not the best play, that.

I'm not saying it's over for Markov, but... as much time as he's missed the past few years, I can't fathom why he AND the Habs are still trying to make this work. He's a rare talent, for sure, but eventually a call has to be made on whether your body can take more of this. Sometimes a player decides 'enough is enough', sometimes a team does (see the NFL's Colts dealing with talented but injury-riddled Bob Sanders). It's rapidly approaching time for one of the two sides here to have a very honest assessment and decide whether or not this is even a good idea anymore.
