Stempniak, Holmstrom, Brodziak, Jokinen, Grabovski and Kostitsyn are around, as are Langenbrunner and Arnott, though they'll likely resign with the Blues. It'd be a right-wing slot, so that likely exempts everyone but Stempniak, Brodziak, Langenbrunner, Arnott and Holmstrom, who can play either wing. I can't see the Bruins wanting to get smaller, so in theory, Arnott and Brodziak are the ideal choices there. Not exactly likely to be better than Horton, are they?

So, RFAs: James Neal, Kris Versteeg and Nikolai Kulemin are all up for grabs this summer, though they'd all require pay hikes, especially the first two if their respective bids for the scoring titles keep up all season. Much greener pastures here, but Neal and Versteeg will likely stay where they are. The Pens would sooner dump their older scorers to pay Neal more than lose him. He's young, he scores every other game. He's key for them. Likewise Versteeg for the Panthers, and Lord knows they can afford a bigger contract that any competitor could. Kulemin's a thought, though. He's a pretty productive guy, and a big one, too. He'd fit the Bruins mold fairly well. But would Burke be willing to give him up for a fair price? Who knows.

I guess the conclusion here is that there aren't exactly a plethora of top-six right-wingers around - doubly so when you discount smaller guys like Stempniak. Still, when push comes to shove, Horton's a big cap hit and the rest of the top six wingers are going to need bigger paycheques - and deserve them more than he does. They can't keep all four, and right now he's the least useful one of them.

Chemistry is hugely important in the NHL, and I think, since they won the Cup, the Bruins realize that he is a big part of that chemistry and thus needed to overpay. Probably worth doing, though it probably means Horton and Kelly will be gone.

Alright, open question for Bruins fans - do you think they should stick it out with Horton and try to break him out of his slump, or let him go and try to get a better goal-scorer? If so, who do you think would fill his shoes best?

Krejci isn't paid to score goals. He's a playmaker who led the team in assists and points last season. Slightly overpaying a good player is not such a bad thing.

Carter is a totally different kind of player and had a different role in Philadelphia. He is paid to put the puck in the net. Krejci is paid to set up his linemates. His numbers have been hurt by the poor play of Horton. Horton is just struggling converting his chances.

Wow that's a lot of money for Krejci. In his best season he scored 22 goals. if that's the going rate for 22 goals, Jeff Carter should be making 10 million. Of course Krejci did show up in the playoffs, while Jeff Carter plays like a little girl when it matters, but still, he's a minus 2 on the season and scored 13 goals last year (his second best year). They overpaid for a guy who couldn't even negotiate with other teams yet.

Not mentioned in the article is Nathan Horton. He has one more year left after this one and his base is $5.5 Million. He just may be the odd man out in all of this as his contract ends the same year as Seguin's. I really like Horton and hope they find a way to keep him. But something has to give here.

I had thought they would deal Krejci because he plays center and figured that Seguin and Bergeron would be the #1 and #2 centers. But it looks as if the team is happy in the long term keeping Seguin at wing. At $5M, they aren't moving Krejci down to the third line. Interesting.

What's bad about paying well for a guy who plays at his best when it really matters? Johan Franzen does the same for Detroit- pretty decent in the regular season, workhorse in the playoffs. Claude Lemieux was the same during his career. If that's the kind of player Krejci is building himself into, pay the man and enjoy the good times.

(Well, I don't mean he should be a turtle like Lemieux... eh, you know what I mean.)

Maybe signing that big deal in the morning was the motivation for the great game he had last night.

Being a 5 million dollar man will definitely get people talking around here, and put even more pressure on Krejci to perform night in and night out. As mentioned, if he's the clutch performer when it counts most, that's good enough for me.

Maybe getting that deal done helped with that break out game he had last night. I don't understand the complaint on the deal. At worst, he's a $4 million player. As for the Bruins cap, they have a core of young players coming up in the next couple of years who will help bring the overall cap number down and Chara, Thomas, and Seidenberg won't be around forever.
