Pronger's performance that playoff run was one of the greatest sustained individual efforts I've ever seen. He was on a level that I don't think anyone (himself included in his 2007 or 2010 runs) has matched since.

They had Pronger and Sheldon Souray and Ryan Smyth, and ... well... they had a LOT of talent that they sold off / wrote off in a short period of time.

Now they have a lot of young *small* talent. Maybe I'll eat crow but until they get some good sized forwards that can play in the playoffs, they'll never be more than a promising team. And Smid? I'm not as high on him as this writer is. He's a solid defenseman, but he's not a guy that I would say fills half of 2008 Pronger's shoes.

The 90s/00s saw a LOT of the best defensemen ever. Coffey, Blake, Lidstrom, Pronger, MacInnis, Bourque, Chelios, Leetch... Teams that had these guys became cup contenders just by having them. It's hard to say trading any of these guys is a "hellava deal".

Optimistic, isn't he? Look, Eberle is sure a nice item to have, but the fact remains that when Pronger was there, the Oilers came a hair away from the Cup. They haven't made the playoffs since he left. They didn't get hosed on the trade, and it's not like they'll never be back in the Cup hunt, but to say that it was a 'helluva deal' is just silly.
