Easy, easy. The Bears are my boys, but it’s only November. They had a slow start and now they are playing well. But it’s a long, long year and the “dog days” of January and February await.

Now clearly the emergence of Seguin and the successful tandeming of Rask and Thomas are reasons to be very optimisitc. And afterall, they are the Stanley Cup Champions.

Running a 9-game win streak, the B’s are now at a point where they absolutely HATE to lose a game. When you got a good thing goin’ you just don’t want it to stop. And mentally, they’re at a point where they know what it takes to win, night-in night-out. This is the Stanley Cup team of last spring, looking just a little bit better.

I believe they handled Seguin just about right. It seems he did all the right things in the off-season, but the biggest difference is experience and confidence. Nobody can expect an 18 year-old to be plopped into the NHL and be ready for the ride. Last year, I’m sure he knew he had it all figured out. What 18 year-old kid doesn’t? But in reality, he had brief stretches of brilliance, and quite a bit of time where he looked lost.

Sitting in the press box, having solid veterans to guide him, getting chances to prove himself, and seeing just how good it can be to win … all seem to have served him well. He’s figured out how to play the NHL game in the span of a year. Only a few are that skilled and that smart. Very lucky to find himself in a great organization at its peak. (Imagine if he had been drafted by Columbus? Oh Lord, so many ways for that to go wrong.)

Seguin put on 12 pounds and has a year behind him. Don’t forget that Hall had an extra year of junior hockey over Seguin. I have never been a fan of the way Claude has dealt with younger players. But between Marchand and Seguin, I now have to give Claude some credit. Maybe Caron is next. Losing seven of the first ten may actually be a blessing in disguise as it seems to have given the Bruins a certain edge about them. They have gone from being passive to being aggressive. Last night, they were a bit passive. But with four games in six days, they will not be able to go full throttle in all of them. Sabres up next and it’s a big game.

No doubt. I imagine Boston, having not won the Cup and having a very deep squad, didn’t necessarily want to put too much weight on him – A) because it tends to screw with players’ development and B) because it wouldn’t be wise to rely on a rookie, even a highly-touted one, to be a key part of your Cup run. Too much can happen. Now that he’s got the experience and they’ve got the Cup, they can pretty much do whatever with him, and have.

i think they handled him well last year. they made him hungry. him not having gauranteed ice time last year i think made him work harder and it showed in the playoffs and his start this year. kudos to management there

I find myself wondering how much of Seguin’s surprise start to the season was a major change in his focus in the offseason, or if he was held back some last season for some reason and only now is off the leash. Either way, while I was pretty concerned last year, this year he’s showing why he went second in the draft- this kid is amazing.
