Hall of Shame video: Craig Smith misses empty net

Nov 17, 2011, 11:17 PM EDT

Rookie Craig Smith is having an outstanding first year for the Nashville Predators, but it’s going to take a long time for him to live this one down.  Just ask Patrik Stefan.

At least the Predators still got the 4-1 win over the Leafs.

I love how Nashville’s commentators find this absolutely hysterical.

The reason they were laughing so loud was because they were the Leafs broadcasters (Joe Bowen and Greg Millen). The most embarassing part was that the goal judge thought it went in to, so the red light and theatrics of a goal were let loose. No one in the history of hockey ever top shelved a puck out of play from that close!

While anything can happen with a bouncing puck, or when the puck happens to stick a bit to your stick… its pretty bad to miss an empty net from that close.

At least it didn’t result in a game tying goal the other way, like this Patrik Stefan flub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0CFWPxdss

I still feel kinda bad for Stefan cuz that puck bounces out of no where straight over his stick and the commentator calls him out for it and says there’s no room for that in the NHL haha give me a break… still is the craziest thing ever!

Yeah you gotta feel for him a little bit with how the puck just bounced perfectly over his stick, and the announcer was definatlly too harsh on him. Still though, if he just put it in the net with a soft wrist shot instead of going for the tap in backhand we wouldn’t be talking about it right now.

First I thought it was the lefty whiff at center ice. I thought, “that’s not that bad.” The real one is bad.

Smith: That’s not what they meant when they told you to “roof it”. Awesomely embarrassing moment. :)
