Brad Marchand doesn’t like nicknames that mangle his surname

Nov 17, 2011, 1:54 PM EDT

Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has many nicknames. There’s Marshy, Squirrel, Rat, Tomahawk and our personal favorite, Nose Face Killah.

For the most part, Marchand likes his monikers (heck, he and half the Bruins were rocking Nose Face shirts during the Stanley Cup final) but there’s one he’s not especially fond of:

“Marshmont” is courtesy Felger & Mazz on 98.5 the Sports Hub in Boston. The name became popular when caller Rick from Natick kept mispronouncing Marchand as “Marshmont”. Rick from Natick would often call to complain that Marshmont wasn’t ready to be in the NHL and how Marshmont didn’t belong on the team. But then Marshmont starting lighting it up, and Rick from Natick admitted he was wrong about Marshmont.

Regardless of Rick from Natick’s apology, the nickname stuck. “I don’t like Marshmont” became one of Felger and Mazz’s go-to soundbytes (along with other morning zoo staples like fart noises and the slide whistle, I’m guessing.)

As you can imagine, Nose Face doesn’t appreciate the butchering of his surname.

“Whatever makes them feel cool about themselves, I guess. I think it could be seen as disrespectful. They know I don’t like it and they calling me that. I’m not disrespecting their name or anything,” Marshmont Marchand told CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty. “They can call me whatever they want, but I won’t be talking to them [Felger and Mazz] if they keep calling me that. I’m not fond of the name.”

In closing, I’d like to note that of the Marchand-approved nicknames, I forgot to include Andrew Ference‘s name for him — Honey Badger.

Why Honey Badger?

“Everybody is calling him a weasel, but I call him a Honey Badger,” said Ference. “Have you seen it on YouTube? Go ahead and type in Honey Badger on YouTube and tell me what you think.”

Do it. Do it.

Must be a slow news day in the NHL.

From the first time I saw him I said Marchand looks like a little rat.

With regard to him taking offense to the Marshmont nickname… who cares? A little immature to take that personally.

So it’s save to say he isn’t friends with Chris Berman?

    Beats “yummy fingers”, I guess…

Well, I’ve defended Marchand all day long on this board. He certainly has his haters. I particularly dislike the juvenile types who poke fun at his looks. My bet is they’d give their right arm to be Brad Marchand. And I’ve even pointed out that he is the spitting image of the Marquis de Lafayette. I almost did a double-take recently while visiting the National Portrait Gallery in DC.

Having said that, really, there’s nothing to get all uptight about. It was quite funny, and is now getting a bit worn out, but still … it’s all in good fun. Actually, Felger means it as a compliment – you were this guy who was so inconsequential that people didn’t even know your name, and now you’re … Mr. Big Time. It’s an acknowledgement of your unexpected success. All the way from nowhere to somewhere. I’d take that with a smile any day of the week.

But if it ticks him off, out of respect I’d just let it drop. Whatever.

It’s a stupid nickname. If he’s cool with you calling him f#$%face, why be a dick about it?

Typical f’ing Boston: totally uncreative and disrespectful – complete inferiority complex to NYC. And the driving in Boston is ridiculous.

Felger’s nickname really is douchebag. So he will give no sympathy to Marchand.

As with most Boston sports stories these days, it seems like it is the media that is the issue, not the athlete.

I’d take Marchand on my team any day of the week, and call him nothing but “Sir.”

    Felger & Mazz are DB’s anyway….

Lesson to take from this: Andrew Ference has a great sense of humour.

      Also: Brad Marchand eats snakes.

Wait I’m trying to understand this, does he not like these names?

Can uncle Shanny require him to wear a visor? Not for his protection, for the fans protection.
