Bruins provide tonight’s tear-jerking moment

Nov 12, 2011, 8:35 PM EDT

Every now and then, a video comes along that can cut through even the iciest, most cynical heart. The Boston Bruins provided one of those moments tonight, as Lori and Daron Jacobs were surprised to see that their son Charles wasn’t in Afghanistan – he was in Boston for the ceremonial puck drop. Prepare to be moved:

Dear God. Her head barely gets to the Bruins logo. And Chara is leaning over.

But on a less “HOLY SHIT CHARA IS HUGE” subject, that was very, very cool. Speaking as someone who has at times dropped in on mom and dad out of the blue like that, it’s always really great to see their reactions. Regardless of the circumstances – military service, university, travel, whatever – parents really come to miss their kids after extended periods like that, and a surprise visit like that can absolutely make their day. This made me really happy to watch. I’m glad the Bruins organization participated in setting this up. Great stuff.
