I was just saying yesterday that, though it is early, McDonagh looks like the offensive-minded yet responsible defenseman the Rangers have been looking for since the days of Brian Leetch. Stall was supposed to be that guy, but his offensive side didn't pan out quite as big as they'd hoped (his shut-down defense has still made him the Rangers best D-man). Then Del Zotto was supposed to be that guy. He is improving a little more this year, but is still a ways off. If Staal can get healthy, the pairings of Staal-Girardi and McDonagh-Sauer will prove to be two of the highest return, lowest cap-impacting defense pairings in the NHL ($9 million for the four of them this season).

...well, at least the Ribeiro deal for a guy (Janne Niinimaa) who went to play in Switzerland at the end of the season worked out - I mean the Theodore deal for a guy (David Aebischer) who went to play in Switzerland the following season worked out - I mean the D'Agostini (21 goals for St Louis) deal for Aaron Palushaj (good depth player...for Hamilton) worked out - I mean the Sergei Kostitsyn (23 goals for Nashville) deal for Dustin Boyd (now in the KHL) worked out - I mean the Latendresse (25 goals for Minnesota in his first year there) deal for Benoit Pouliot (now failing for his 4th team) worked out - I mean the Grabovski (29 goals for Toronto) deal for Greg Pateryn (he's still in college) worked out. It takes a great GM and pro scouting staff to accomplish such feats of pure genius! Can't wait for the next Gauthier (i.e. Gainey) blockbuster!!!
