Exactly. Neither Burke nor Chiarelli saw the draft picks coming at all. Both of them expected less from the deal. Not a single person in the Leafs organization expected the kind of performance they got. It happened, it can’t be taken back and frankly, if I were a Bruins fan, I’d be chanting “Thank you Kessel” too because holy shit Tyler Seguin is already a first-line centre/winger and he’s fucking awesome, but I do think it’s made bigger than it really is. They made a deal for draft picks, they turned out higher than anyone expected. Simple as.

I certainly wouldn’t equate the two. Seguin’s obviously a great player in the making – but aside from one explosive performance, admittedly at the right time to have one, he wasn’t a big factor. There were a lot of players doing a lot more than he was. That’s the point. The fact that he’s won a Cup doesn’t say a huge amount about Seguin himself. It speaks for the Bruins as a whole.

Aye, there’s truth in that. Though, strangely enough, they now have just about the necessary the cap space for their entire winning roster (sans Marc Savard) AND Kessel. Wouldn’t take much to fit him, actually, not that they’d want to. He’s not crash-bang enough for Claude Julien. Point is, Chiarelli’s a cap-management sorcerer.

It is getting old, I agree but it will never go away just due to the market it happened in. I mean we’re talking about Boston / Maple Leafs, media whores!!!! it is what it is… the only part that Burke didn’t see coming was his team being a top lottery pick. I bet he thought they would miss the playoffs by 6 points or so, not a million. The trade worked out well for both teams but the winner is clear as day. I could care less tho.

Yes Seguin might have only been a major factor in one game but the experience he got from that playoff run will serve him throughout his career.

However I cannot agree with you that Kessel would have won the cup as well. The problem with Kessel was that he wanted more then the 4 year 16 million he was offered and he did not fit into Boston’s system of defense first. Last year the Bruins were up against the cap without Kessel’s contract. If they had signed Kessel in 09 it would have changed everything. There would have been many trades and signing that have happened the last 2 years that would not have happened if the Bruins were up against the cap because of an overpriced contract.

So out of the many positive factors of the Kessel trade, possibly the biggest one was not having to pay him all that money that would have handcuffed the Bruins for years to come. Instead it freed them up to bring in quality depth and because of this trade helped win us the cup.

In fairness, Seguin really only made a major impact in one game of the playoffs last year. Yes, he scored in game 1 against Tampa, but that was still a Bruins’ loss. He was far from a huge factor in the Stanley cup run.
He didn’t even have a spot on the ice until Bergeron got knocked out for a couple games.

The Bruins probably don’t advance to the SCF if Seguin doesn’t play the way he did in game 2 of round 3, but outside of that game, I don’t think he made a tremendous difference.

Im tired of hearing about this trade. Yes, Boston won the trade BIG time. Now move on. We dont have to bring it back up everytime either one of them scores a goal.

Sorry but Seguin did have a lot to do with us winning the cup. If it wasn’t for him we would have never beaten Tampa in the ECF (clutch). PS……please don’t ever compare Tomas kaberle to sequin.

Agree on all points, but let’s not make Seguin’s Cup out to be a big thing. He wasn’t exactly a primary contributor to winning it. He was on a great team. So was Kaberle. Doesn’t mean he went out and played a major part in winning the thing. Kessel would’ve won it too, were he still in Boston – point is, the fact that Seguin’s won a Cup isn’t really saying much about Seguin himself so much as it is about the Bruins as a whole.

Last time I checked the Leafs have 6 of there wins from the bottom seven of each conference.

Against Boston the Leafs are 0-2 and have been outscored 13-2.

The line for both players;

Seguin 4 Goals 3 Assists +4
Kessel 0 Goals 0 Assists -2

So Kessel had a good month against some bad teams. Tyler Seguin has won a Stanley Cup. Seguin is 5 years younger then Kessel. Add in Dougie Hamilton’s potential and this trade is headed towards one of the worst trades in the History of the NHL. There is a reason we here in Boston thank Kessel when he comes to town. And we will enjoy doing it for years to come.

This kid can walk the walk. Who knows (or cares) who won the trade, we have a star-quality player here. This kid is good, damn good. Seguin (rhymes with Reagan) never suffered a Cup hangover. For the rest of the Bruins, hangover has officially ended.

If it were me, I’d be worried that my fortune has been too good. High draft pick, Stanley Cup in my first season, all the craziness after winning the Cup, taking the league by storm in my sophomore season. Good looks, lots of money and still a teenager. Living the Dream indeed.
