here’s a thought: how about just playing extra periods until someone wins? basketball and baseball do that, they don’t bother with BS point systems or BS skills competitions to decide a game. football allows ties, but football kinda sucks. unlike baseball, hockey teams don’t often play back-to-back games, so if they play for a while they have time to recharge. keep playing 20 minute 5 on 5 periods until someone wins. i hate the 4 on 4 gimmick, i hate the shootout gimmick, i’m not a purist by any means but i’m not a fan of hockey being turned into a circus either.

I hate shootouts. And penalty kicks in soccer. Go an extra 5 of 4 v 4.

Also jim jackson on the philly broadcast brought up a valid point that when guys pull off the spin move they technically have break and no longer have forward momentum while spinning. There is definitely some gray area in the rules

I’m still amazed the NHL is using a skills competition to settle a tied hockey game.

How about an extra 5 mins of 4 on 4? If you can’t get a goal in 10 mins, so be it.

There’s more to it than whether Briere came to a stop, did the puck stop moving also? The Shoot-out Rule is the same as the Penalty Shot Rule 24.2 wherein ‘. . . .The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. . . .and any time the puck crosses the goal line or comes to a complete stop, the shot shall be considered complete. ‘ So was the puck still moving on or off his stick after throwing on the brakes?

When Briere puts on the breaks- the snow shower he gives Hedber is at least 6′-0″ high- it is physically impossible not to fully “stop” -(although a micro-second)- after that. The guys in the “war” room need to brush up on their physics.

This is tough, because there was still a little bit of movement. For all intents and purposes, though, it was a stop.

Problem is, you cant put “for all intents and purposes” in the rule book and expect it to be consistent.

If they allow a move like this- the goalie’s might as well go sit on the bench and just let the players flip a coin to see who wins. – they must have the heat up too high in the “war” room.

Agreed on the horrible replay shown here.

It is very borderline, no doubt. I’ll trust the judggement of the war-room, but I would not recommend anyhone trying that move in the future; could easily be called off.
