If it was squid or octopus it would have been shoveled off the ice and stuffed into a trash can. However it wasn’t, it was a racially motivated gesture. I have an idea, lets put this guys mom in an arena and whip eggs at her and hold signs if you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen or put him in an arena and throw feces at him and make him pick it up, P.O.S.
I’m white, I can’t jump and Billy Hoyle would never have done Sidney Deane like that, even after he hustled him out of Rosie Perez’s loot. It’s 2011 people…
I’ll stop with the early 90′s basketball movie references when sports fans get the message… watch White Men Can’t Jump and you might learn how to treat each other with some respect.

Bottom line: You’re not going to be able to take the tradition away from the ice. “The bad example for children” should ban them from watching action or karate movies too… Dork

I understand this was the irresponsible act of a racist that will and should be punished. What I don’t understand is why the NHL continues to let it’s players fight on the ice, during games and punishes them with only a few minutes in the penalty box. A lot of NHL teams even an employ a player who can barely even skate to do nothing more than be the designated “hitter”.

Talk about two-faced morals. Arrest and fine a man for setting a bad example for children while allowing the players themselves to set bad examples for children on a nightly basis.

The Ontario police should start arresting the players as well. Obviously the NHL isn’t going to do anything about it.

PS: Don’t give me that crap about a player who could have slipped on the banana peel either. He could have slipped on a hat or an octopuss carcass just as easily.

Harder to buy the lack of judgement excuse given he brought a banana to a hockey game. Pretty sure they don’t sell those at the concession stands. He knew well before he got to the rink what he was going to do, knew it was disgusting, waited all game, and still went ahead with it. Just a total jerk at a loss for words now that he has to answer for his stupidity

I think people need to realize that when you treat situations like this with such media presence it gives the “racists” what they are looking for which is the attention. If he’s gonna get in s$&@ then give him whats coming but don’t fuel other people that might not know about it otherwise, and give younger people the chance to continue to bring racism to the front of everyones minds with all the attention.

I can’t buy the ‘lapse in judgement’ as him being excused for what he did. Jeez! Getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk is a lapse in judgement. Trying to hold up a convenience store is a lapse in judgement…so is beating someone up or shooting someone in a fit a anger. So we’re supposed to let that go too because it’s a lapse in judgement?

I don’t think jail time or anything like that is called for, but don’t minimize what he did either by using cliched phrases.

a fine and community service. the max $2k fine won’t cover the $10k to keep his sorry as$ in jail by the taxpayers. plus, he will wish he wasn’t such an idiot and jerk after his 50 hours picking up highway trash. have him serve it half in the middle of winter and then the other half in the middle of the summer. that way he gets both extremes.
