Quick hits: Street hockey in Times Square, Bryan Murray’s hatred of smart phones and more

Here are a few quick and interesting stories during the last weekend of August.

Adrian Dater wrote an amusing piece for SI.com about how “team bonding suffers” thanks to modern gadgets such as smart phones, as players “have created insular worlds” where they even (gasp) might text members from other teams from time to time. (If you ask me, it all really started with those pesky Walkmen *shakes walking cane angrily* … )

Look, it’s annoying when you’re having a conversation with someone who refuses to look up from their text messages, but people who think that players aren’t bonding with their teammates anymore clearly haven’t witnessed the triple low-five in all of its glory.

Then again, maybe society really is falling apart one emoticon-filled text message/game of “Angry Birds” at a time.

  • Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy takes a look at today’s landscape for head coaching in the NHL compared to 10 years ago. He actually found that coaches experience a slight bit of extra job security, as the average job spans 2.8 years instead of 2.5. Beyond lifers like Lindy Ruff and Barry Trotz, Wyshynski says that five seasons is the new benchmark for longevity among coaches. It’s a tough racket.
  • Finally, here is today’s evidence of the power of spontaneous street hockey. Weather concerns provided the rare opportunity for a shirts and skins game in Times Square, which you can see in the video below (via Kukla’s Korner).

What Bryan Murray should hate is that there are 29 GM’s in the league who are better at their jobs than he is! This guy is awful and yet teams just keep giving him opportunity after opportunity. He’s decimated that Sens roster!

When I first read the headline I thought it said Murray hated both those things and more and that this would be a post about a grumpy old man who hates the world. I certainly would if I was his age and had to manage the Sens

Heh good point on the headline, so I changed it up.

Fun Fact: the original Walkmans came with three jacks. Two for headphones and one for a microphone so that you and a friend could listen to music and talk to each other at the same time. The inventor was worried about his buyers becoming isolated and tuned out from the rest of the world.

    Murray is just brutal.
He took a team with puck-movers, turned them into slow plugs like Jason Smith and Kuba, has hired a bevy of yes-men and consistently blamed everything on John Muckler, coaches, the price of tea in China while hollering “ACCOUNTABILITY” at every turn. The man has never built a team from the ground up and he’s going to turn is into contenders? If you’re going to bring up Anaheim, there were no more than FIVE players on the winning roster (Gigger, MacDonald, couple others) from the time he was GM and they brought in two new GMs and a new coach.

Yeah, Murray is a dud. He needs to go after this contract and the subsequent bottom five finishes, and when I say “go” it doesn’t mean Tim “Bryan’s Mouthpiece and Ears” Murray either. Get an outsider that will bring some accountability to this franchise and not turn it into a country club that gives ice time to anyone that asks for it and refuses to hold players accountable off the ice.
