Editor of Shark Circle here. I don't think you have anything to worry about, Couture won't go the way of Cheechoo. Cheechoo couldn't skate, and he was one-dimensional. He did well when space was inherently given to him by lax defending right at the beginning of the post-lockout years, when Thornton could find him in scoring areas, and he did poorly once defenses adjusted and improved their gap control. Once he wasn't given any free space, and had to create his own shot, he got into big problems. He didnt have the speed to create his own shot. Sort of similar to what happened with Dany Heatley last year, except Heatley still has a ton more left in the tank than Cheechoo did, and has so many other skills beyond speed that even at average speed he's a dangerous player.

But Couture, he can skate, and he's not just a goalscorer. Even if he hits a funk in scoring, he will help the team other ways. His new deal is a total bargain. That's the benefit of bringing up young players.
