Of course not. It’s just that he would never be able to carve out his own legacy if he chose hockey. He’d always be his father’s son. His passion is baseball, which is great because he can have a legacy all his own, whatever that turns out to be. When you’re young and ambitious, that’s usually the way you want it.

I’m getting way ahead of myself here, but when will we begin to hear talk of a trade to the Blue Jays so he can play in his ancestral homeland. If this kid has enough talent to make it big, they’ll want him. Imagine the folks in Ontario being able to root for a Gretzky playing pro sports again. Might even be able to fill up that giant ballpark with a Gretzky in the lineup.

And as a Red Sox fan, I know I’d enjoy watching the Sox play the Jays with the young Mr. Gretzky on the field. It just seems like yesterday I was watching his dad over at the Garden … oh Lord, I can’t be that old.

Yes, what could make you more famous than Wayne Gretzky? Being on the Chicago Cub team that finally won a WS.

Very smart move to chart his own course. Still pro sports, but at least it’s not hockey.
