They did not play him just because he was a rookie, not due to performance. In the two games he was up this year he scored a beauty against Colorado and he was the best player on the ice to not score a goal through 2 periods in a 1-1 game against the Sharks before he got benched for simply being a rookie.

The Canucks are going to regret this trade when he returns to the NHL in 3 years time.

By the way the photo you have in the article is Lee Sweatt #57, not Sergei Shirokov #25.
