Maybe he's leaving his guys wide open because he's too busy trying to check the other players, and ending up on the ground with a concussion. You can't blame one player, or the coach for their sweep in the playoffs. They deserved that. They didn't play their best, therefor they didn't deserve to move forward in the series. Now Crosby is good, but at least Green isn't whining to the refs about every little call. He takes it like a man, and deals with it.

"excessively-critiqued defenseman Mike Green "

There's nothing excessive about it. The guy is horrible, and with the way he plays, there's no way you can rightly call him a "defensemen." He leaves his guy wide open on the backside of the goal regularly. He gets lost on the walls, especially by anyone with some skill like Crosby. Notice how the Caps were rolling in the playoffs until Mike Green came back from injury? Then their entire team started to stall! I can't blame Green entirely though, as it was mostly the coach's fault for letting Green on the ice when the rest of the Caps were playing fine before he came back.
