Also, he sees the writing on the wall. Holtby and Neuvy are for real. With Varly being so injury prone he’d end up as trade bait or sent to Hershey to bury his contract. Varly was kidding himself if he really thought the Caps would give $4M a year to an unproven, injury prone goalie while his understudy beat him out for the #1 job and with the possible goalie of the future showing that he’s ready step up now.

And don’t blame the medical staff Varly. Ya couldn’t stay health in Hershey either. Good ridance!!

And probably better coaching. A goalie would take those two things over high scoring offense any day.

With all that said, the Caps aren’t exactly losing much, if anything, when they still have Neuvirth and Holtby.
