Why would he do this. Lets say he ends up signing with the Rangers (or Leafs or anyone else) and that same team would have traded a 3rd round pick for the right to talk to him. Sure that helps Dallas, but it also hurts his new team. Why would he want to do that?

LOL, that’s about as “bad faith” a deal as you can make! I can’t see how anyone with even an ounce of integrity could sign off on such a trade.

Richards said long ago that accepting a trade makes him feel an obligation to the team that picked him up. Like it’s been said, he’s earned the right to be a FREE agent. Dallas took a gamble. It didn’t work. Oh well. It’s not Richards’ responsibility now to make it easier for a team that will now be a rival.

Just because he gets traded and a team gets to negotiate with him first doesn’t mean that he has to sign there. He can simply tell his agent not to take any of the deals on the table from wherever he is traded. Why not let the Stars pick up a draft pick or two? Richards is screwing the Stars here.

I don’t see how you can blame Richards.

It’s a bit rich for Nieuwendyk to complain about how he has no room to maneuver on Richards’ remaining value to the team. GMs sign the contracts and have all season to make deals. They need to accept responsibility for pinning themselves in a corner.
