Whether he can play or should play are two different things. The doctors will never be able to say he's not risking his long-term health by returning to the ice, because they simply don't know that. That field of medicine is evolving. And you can always get a doctor to tell you what you want to hear. Just ask the widow of Len Bias.

He's definitely taking a risk, and he and the Bruins will decide what level of risk they're willing to take. Strictly from a fans POV, I'd rather not see him out there. The first big hit he takes to the noggin and he's back on the stretcher. Odds are he'll get another hit to the noggin. That's hockey. He's prone to concussions. That much we know. And yeah, we all know what makes a pro athlete tick. We're not stupid here.

Again...missing the point of my comment entirely.
I don't want to see him out there getting himself hurt.
I am saying that for any fan or media member to think he should quit because "He has nothing to prove" or "Should just settle down with his family" has no idea what makes a competitive athlete tick.
If the doctors say that they can play, they will.
Leave it up to them.

Of course he's done. The Bruins are being respectful and polite in letting the 'when will he come back' thing play out. I think Savard must be slowly coming to the realization that his hockey career is over. Sometimes we're the last to know the obvious, and there's really no reason for him to make the final decision now anyway.

As for the 'hyper-competitive' athlete, well, I really won't be entertained watching a guy destroy his health out there on the ice. I don't want to see it. Sure, we'll watch for the same reason we look at a car accident. Then we'll wish we never saw it. And you don't need a medical degree to figure this one out.

OH... OK, Dr. stakex... I didn't know you had gone over the MRIs and EEGs and examined Savard with the Bruins medical staff...
Nice job diagnosing and dictating some one else's future when you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
I never said he shouldn't retire.
I say he is in the care of the best doctors in the world and it will be his and their decision and not some tool like you.

This "competitive monster" is having a hard time remembering what he ate for lunch yesterday... six months after his concusion. It does not take a brain surgeuon to realize he has some very serious issues, and that returning to the game would be very dangerous for him.

You become more prone to concusions after you have suffered one... and the symptoms can become worse with each one. So if your having symptoms six months after your second major concusion in a year, only an idiot could argue returning to play would be a good idea. I do agree there are times when fans/media don't know whats best for a player.... but in this case its pretty obvious. If Savard plays ever again (The odds of Savard ever playing hocky in the NHL again are so slim they might as well be none), he is taking an amazing risk that he will suffer another concusion... and face even worse symptoms.

So really, lets hear your argument as to why no one has any idea what is "best" for Savard... other then some lame idea that professional athletes are somehow different then everyone else. I want to hear why its not in Savards intrest to retier, when its a fact that another concussion could be a very very bad thing for him... even leading to permanant brain damage or dysfunction.

Not to pick on you, but I really have a hard time with fans and media pretending to know what is best for a professional athlete.

Leave it to the doctors and the athletes themselves.

Every time an guy like Tedy Bruschi or Marc Savard gets a serious injury, we hear the media and fans saying things like "He has nothing left to prove." or "He should think about his family", when the fact is they have no idea what makes a professional athlete tick.

These are competitve MONSTERS who live to go after it with the best in their respective sports.
