They may have a good prospect waiting in the wings, but young goaltenders are fickle and very rarely hit their stride before 28. The price tag isn’t enormous and the length of the deal isn’t gratuitous, so if Lehner steals the show and takes over the job there are plenty of teams in need of solid goaltending and would be willing to take him off Ottawa’s hands. You really can’t have too many capable goaltenders considering there are only a handful of “franchise” goalies in the league.
