Hockey Day Preview: Pond hockey gets to the root of it all (Video)

Feb 18, 2011, 12:17 PM EDT

One of the features of Hockey Day In America this year will take a look at what sorts of things feature hockey elsewhere across the country. One of the places where hockey is arguably the biggest part of life is Minnesota. In the land of 10,000 lakes they declare that they’re the “State of Hockey” and take great pride in what they do. From the Minnesota Wild to the annual high school hockey championships that sell out Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul each year, hockey is life.

One thing that occurs each year that really brings the game home to its roots in Minnesota is the annual U.S. Pond Hockey Championships at Lake Nokomis that takes place each January. Here, teams of friends gather together each year to try and win the coveted Golden Shovel at one of the most serene and picturesque settings in the wilderness that one could dream up. Men, women, children of all ages and skill levels all come out each year to celebrate the game in one of the most enjoyable ways possible.

Pond hockey is just a way of life for hockey lovers in Minnesota and we’ve got a sneak peak at what you’ll see this weekend on NBC as we scope out the roots of the game in the great white north.

There was a documentry done on this tourny two or three years ago, its fantastic. They have played it on FSN North in Minnesota a couple of times, but its also available on DVD. Its great for hockey fans.(PS I am not involved with the project at all, just thought it was a great movie the couple times i’ve seen it)

This Video is from Eagle River WI. USA Pond Hockey Championship games were played on 11-13 Feb 2011 in the video. Next Games will be 10-12 Feb 2011. Stop in the little Restaurant in the video while you are at the games. It is Faye’s Dinky Diner. Not my place but the food is very good. Check out

Was so excited to see our small town with a BIG love for hockey featured on your site…but SOOOO disappointed to see you said it was in Minnesota. Not sure if MN has something similar, but this video is from EAGLE RIVER, WISCONSIN. A few weekends ago, we hosted the 6th Annual LaBatt Blue Pond Hockey Championships…and it will continue for years to come – Such a successful event that brought 250 teams from over 20 states to compete in a fun-filled weekend.
I hope someone can retract the MN article and give Eagle River some props for putting this event on –
    Thank You –
