Goal of the Night - Taylor Hall (December 4)

There were three overtime game winning goals (not counting shootout game winners) scored during Saturday’s 12 games. One was sort of an ugly one when Stephane Robidas shot a knuckler past Jose Theodore to give the Stars a win over the Wild. The other two were as aesthetically pleasing as they were crucial, though, with Anze Kopitar drilling a one-timer to help the Kings beat the Red Wings and Taylor Hall scoring the OT GWG for the suddenly streaking Edmonton Oilers.

There were also some other pretty nice goals that didn’t quite make the cut. (I’m quite partial to Sammy Pahlsson’s hopping goal, despite how meaningless it was in the big picture of that Penguins-Blue Jackets blowout.)

Ultimately, though, I think Hall’s goal features the right mixture of relevance (it won the Oilers the game, after all) and brilliance. From Ryan Whitney’s fantastic outlet pass to Hall’s almost-matter-of-fact breakaway finish, it’s a beauty all the way around. It’s also Hall’s nine goal of the season, a sign that the promising rookie is starting to heat up and get used to the pro pace.
