Two late goals doom Penguins against Canadiens, Pittsburgh opens new arena 0-2

You really can’t draw too many “big picture” conclusions after only two regular season games, but the Pittsburgh Penguins might have at least a little cause for concern.

The team went ahead 2-1 in the middle of third period thanks to a nice goal by young forward Mark Letestu and it looked like they might get a little revenge (and their first regular season win in their new building, the Consol Energy Center). That was not to be, however, as the Montreal Canadiens scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in rapid succession, as Jeff Halpern scored on a deflection before Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury allowed a soft one against Scott Gomez.

In less than 30 seconds, the Penguins went from winning a grinding game against the team that knocked them out of last season’s playoffs to opening their new building 0-2 with zero points.

Of course, it’s unfair to be too negative to the Penguins because they lost to a determined team in Montreal. Carey Price was probably the star of the game, stopping 36 out of 38 shots as Pittsburgh peppered the net much like they did against Jaroslav Halak in their seven game series. P.K. Subban received a hail of boos every time he touched the puck and with good reason: he got under Crosby’s skin with regularity.

It’s not all bad news for Pittsburgh. Their defense seemed fast and efficient as Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek already seem nicely integrated into a deep group. Sidney Crosby picked up the primary assist on Evgeni Malkin’s first goal, so their two stars are back on the scoresheet.

Perhaps the critiques regarding their lack of high-end wingers is right, though. They certainly didn’t lack aggressiveness in taking shots or bring defensemen in deep, but all too often it seemed like Malkin and Crosby were setting up fruitful chances that ended up fruitless.

Again, it’s far too early to panic in Pittsburgh, but an 0-2 start at home is disappointing to say the least.

  1. Crosby sucks! - Oct 9, 2010 at 11:15 PM

Somewhere the hockey gods are smiling…………….just saying.

Do you know what’s more rewarding than the Red Wings starting the season off with two wins?…..You guessed it, the Pens starting the season off at 0-2!!! And yes … somewhere the hockey gods are smiling. GO WINGS!

  3. Where are the Pens fans? - Oct 10, 2010 at 3:12 AM

I sure heard alot of chirping from those Pittsburgh fans during the pre-season, so I was just wondering…. where are you now?
” I CAN’T HEAR YOU!”… Sorry ’bout that, I was just watching some old reruns of Sgt. Carter on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
Hey, maybe you should check your local T.V. listings, I’m sure that some old reruns would be better than watching (Goober)Crosby and
(Gomer)Malkin! In fact, instead of watching your “Golden Girls” maybe you should “Get Smart” and change the channel the next time the PENS are on T.V. I wouldn’t want you to end up “Bewitched” or end up in the “Twilight Zone”. So wise up & go to the “Head of the Class”, cause on this “3rd Rock from the Sun” the Wings will always be #1.
Yes, “Happy Days” are here again, because it’s NOT “Always sunny in
Philly or Pittsburgh”. But don’t feel that you are alone, because it’s not sunny in Chicago either! Because the RED WINGS put an end to their banner raising party also.

You know what, you are right! It’s as quiet here now as it is in that brand new arena’s locker room! Maybe all those Pittsburgh fans are removing Sidney’s favorite cereal from his locker room cabinet and re-stocking it with “Wheaties”. I bet Mr. Bettman will buy it for Sid the (crybaby) Kid.

  5. Screw the Wings - Oct 10, 2010 at 10:38 AM

BTW, any team that has Todd Bertuzzi on it can go to hockey hell……………..just saying.

  6. JDM - Oct 10, 2010 at 3:45 PM

Well, Mr. “just saying”, let’s see… your not a Pens fan, this we know because of your post “Crosby sucks” and your not a Wings fan because of your post “Screw the wings”. Yet we still don’t know what your team is because you are obviously ashamed to let anyone know, Hell we don’t even know if you are even a hockey fan! So what about it, show your colors, what’s your team? My guess is that you don’t want anyone to know. Probably a cellar dweller that’s only seen the CUP in pictures!…….just saying.

Hey Pittsburgh fans, I read where Mario anointed CONSOL ENERGY CENTER with some melted ice from Mellon Arena before their opening loss to Philly. Now I have all the respect in the world for Mario, great hockey player, great owner, and a great person. That’s why I am offering a little bit of advice. Next time try HOLY WATER!!!

  8. Screw the Wings - Oct 10, 2010 at 8:17 PM

Well, since you asked, my favorite teams are the Avalanche, the Blue Jackets and any team that plays against the Flyers, Penguins and Red Wings. I have season tickets to the Lake Erie Monsters- they’re in the AHL, in case you did not know. I’m a hockey FAN!!!! And when I’m finished here, I’ll sit down and watch NHL On The Fly on the NHL Network. Any more questions? Thank you for asking.

  9. JDM - Oct 11, 2010 at 12:25 AM

Great to hear from you, and I guess now we know why you didn’t mention that you were an Avalanche fan earlier when you made your Bertuzzi comment. Probably realized that after making that comment it’s kind of like the “pot calling the kettle black” isn’t it, what with the cheap shot that Claude Lemieux made on Draper into the
boards…..just saying! As for the AHL season tickets, good for you, some of the best and most exciting hockey played. And I can understand being an Colorado fan, great team for many years with plenty of future hall-of-famers, but Columbus? Good luck with that one! So for now… no more questions… just a comment, While we are here “yanking each others chain” I would like to say that it’s a pleasure to actually chat with someone that can have an intelligent
conversation without all the cussing and name calling that so many resort to. Thank-you and I would also like to see the AV’S do well this season…but that being said just let me add, GO WINGS!!!

Well Pittsburgh fans, where are you? My Colorado/Columbus/AHL friend has sent their reply (with tack & intelligence) and has earned my respect as a true hockey fan, but I have yet to hear from you. I know you are out there, so let me try again…. “The Kid” has finally grown-up and moved out of Mario’s house….Where did he move to?
I’m guessing he moved in with the Bettman’s
