Report: Marc Staal, New York Rangers nearing a new deal

Sep 8, 2010, 4:05 PM EDT

marcstaalblocksshot.jpgIt seems like most of the final restricted free agent dominoes are falling into place as training camps approach around the NHL. Bobby Ryan ended his long negotiation process with the Anaheim Ducks last night. Patric Hornqvist reached an amicable agreement with the Nashville Predators. If reports are correct, Marc Staal will follow suit with the New York Rangers.

Sportsnet’s Mike Brophy reports that Staal is nearing an agreement with the Rangers, but doesn’t provide any guesses on the term or financial details of the deal.

The New York Rangers and defenceman Marc Staal are said to be close to reaching an agreement that would keep the Thunder Bay, Ont. Native on Broadway.

Considering the fact that the team is about $84,000 above the salary cap without Staal’s contract according to, it’s obvious someone might have to go to make room for the steady defensive defenseman. When you factor in his atrocious $6.5 million annual cap hit, it’s natural to wonder if Wade Redden will join the Cristobal Huet Memorial Getting Paid Not to Play in the NHL Club with Michael Nylander and other charter members.

Obviously, this is a rumor without much in details, but it’s reasonable to believe that Staal will want to get his contract settled before training camp begins. We’ll let you know if more information filters through.

Let’s move Redden to Hartford and give Staal $4-5m/year for 3 years.
It may be high given his low point production but he has a strong shot and hands so that will continue to improve. Also with the wages they’re paying the other d-men (Roscival & Girardi) they can’t offer Staal $3M

Staal should get no more than 3.5 million. I actually think Girardi is a better player than him in most games. Staal doesn’t do anything great, so 3.5 million is reasonable. He’s just an average player in the league. I hate people that try to justify his worth by calling him a stay at home D because he hasn’t proven to be that either at this point of his career unless you consider a stay at home D to watch forwards taking second and thrid swipes at Hank and just standing there letting it happen. He is 6-4, but plays like he’s 5-9 160lbs. No mean streak in him at all and that’s part of being a stay at home D. He is a terrible outlet pass unless you consider using the glass a good idea. 53 points in 3 seasons, so he’s not an offensive player. What exactly is he considered because I don’t know? If I had to guess I would consider him just a brother of Eric Staal, just like I do with Jordan, or the other goofball Jared who will probably not make Carolina out of training camp. They should all be kissing Eric’s feet every day of their lives!!!! I do know I will be booing him on Oct 15th during player introductions that’s if the Rangers have the balls to actually introduce the individual players this year. Last year they introduced the Rangers as a team. How lame is that???? lollollollol It’s kind of hard to introduce the Rangers one by one when more than half of them would be booed relentlessly. Even our Captain will get booed, Rosival, Redden, I can’t wait! They make up about 1/3 of our cap hit and are all equally worthless. The only players that will be cheered loudly will be the King, Avery, Del Zotto, Gaborik, Boogaard, probably Frolov, but that’s about it! The introductions should be more entertaining than the game considering we play Toronto and will probably lose, but that’s only if the organization has the balls this year to introduce the players one by one. We will se soon enough can’t wait let the booing begin!!!!!

nyrftw – i would disagree with just about everything you said. marc and jordan are both excellent players. they may not have the same point production as eric, but that is not the only measure of a good player. marc is better than any defenseman on the team, including girardi. any team would love to have him. jordan is probably the best 3rd line center in the league. so much hate for the rangers, why are you even a fan?
