Hossa's contract is the same exact deal, even though it is only for 12 years, he will be the same age as Kovalchuk will be at the end of the contract (42).
There is really no difference between the two contracts and Kovalchuk actually makes more in the end of his deal.
Over the first 66% of the contract, Kovalchuk will make 90% of his money ($90 mil). Over the last 34% of the contract Kovalchuk will make 10% of his money ($10 mil).
Hossa on the other hand, over the first 66% of the contract will make 94% of his money ($59.3 mil). Over the last 34% of the contract Hossa will make only 6% of his money ($3.5 mil).
If you look at the numbers, to me the NHL's argument over contract length and front loading holds no water.
Kovalchuk
Total Salary = $100 millionCap Hit = $6.67 million
Hossa
Total Salary = $62.8 millionCap Hit = $5.23 million
