Is Sidney Crosby a dirty player?

Aug 28, 2010, 5:30 PM EDT

dirtycrosby.jpgMaybe it’s just because it is the summer time or perhaps his gold medal winning goal forced people to eat some crow, but the cottage industry on hating Sidney Crosby dried up a bit lately.

For those of you who simply don’t have the same spring in your step unless the NHL’s golden child is getting run through the mud, you might find this little nugget interesting. A lot of bloggers are putting their own sardonic twists on Puck Daddy’s popular Mount Rushmore feature, so it’s little surprise that the irreverent Penguins blog The Pensblog created their “Mount Dirtymore” which chronicles the team’s dirtiest players of the last 20 years.

(Naturally, the “dirty” scoring system is based on the quantity of Cristina Aguileras each player “earns.”)

crosbyfights.jpgThree of the players won’t leave Penguins fans (or fans of teams who despise the Penguins) with their jaws dropped by any means: Ulf Samuelsson is a notorious villain, Matt Cooke made plenty of enemies in his career, particularly last season and Billy Tibbets … well, he’s just kind of creepy.

Yet casual fans might be surprised to see the Second Savior of the Franchise, Sidney Crosby on that Photoshop. Here is the explanation from Pensblog. (You should click on the link anyway, even if it’s just to see their “shocked faces” GIFs, which include Apollo Creed’s wife reacting to her boxer husband’s tragic in-ring death in “Rocky IV.”)

As is the case with all great players, they are constantly hounded, sticked, hooked, speared, etc., every time they hop over the bench.

Is that a built-in excuse for some of Crosby’s dirty plays? Most likely.
But you’ll be hard-pressed to find multiple clips of dudes like Kane and Toews doing this kind of stuff.

To me, there are two types of sports fans: pom-pom waving types who believe in their teams blindly and glass half-empty types who are willing to acknowledge the flaws of their favorites. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being in either group, but I subscribe to the latter club and cannot deny that the same competitive fire that drives Crosby also pushes him to do some regrettable things. The considerable communal vitriol for Crosby can be over the top at times, but he does earn at least some of that disdain by breaking the rules.

Now that you have my take, I need to know how you feel. Is Crosby a dirty player or just a competitor? Cast your vote in the poll below.

You have to read the article Detroit–I said Flyers and Rangers not Wings. I know the Detroit history also.

  3. adam - Aug 31, 2010 at 11:07 AM

people like you crack me up. the reason why people hate crosby IS because he IS good and beats the living piss out of your team. thats like saying if you drafted him in the first round and he won you a stanley cup that you would hate him?! are you kidding me, you even said it yourself anyone outside pittsburgh doesnt like him and btw thats not true because im not from pennsylvania, any hockey fan should appreciate the talent around the league because i dont think it will ever be matched ever again. He is the face of the NHL for a reason. its not just some coincidence. EVERY GOOD PLAYER HAS HATERS, ITS A FACT, IN EVERY SPORT. if you ask me its people like you that are the whiners and cry babies, if he wasnt good at all then no one would be hating him, but he is good so people are hating him.

  4. HockeyMike - Aug 31, 2010 at 11:27 AM

Adam- they hate Sid so much they take the time to continually attempt to bash him. They waste hours on end reading about him. Jealousy if the greatest form of flattery.

  5. Jeff - Aug 31, 2010 at 1:12 PM

As for sticking up for himself, see his famous taint punching incident where he third manned in a fight and then punched the guy in the taint. Yeah Crosby is a dirty player player but still not worse than Ovie

  6. NikolaiNYR - Aug 31, 2010 at 3:45 PM

I wouldn’t call Crosby dirty, and he’s taken the diving criticism to heart. Watching him this past season he was more likely to try to drive through his opponent and legitimately draw penalties instead of throwing his feet out and looking for a ref (see his first 3 or 4 seasons).
He is still guilty of talking up the refs after the play (and he looks like a spoiled toddler with his red face and pube-stache doing so)and taking cheap shots at players with his stick instead of hitting back his shoulders. But this is common of most hockey players and doesn’t make him especially cheap.
However for comparisons to Gretzky and Datsyuk, those guys win (or won) the Lady Byng Award as voted by their peers most of their careers. Datsyuk wins the award while leading the league in take-aways post lockout. It’s not easy to constantly steal the puck without hooking your opponent.
HockeyMike, you’re an ignorant biased blowhard who can’t construct an honest opinion about your own team. Take a real look at Crosby, he’s no angel and the Red Wings are far from a dirty team.

  7. Detroit - Aug 31, 2010 at 4:19 PM

What’s the first thing Crosby does when Datsyuk picks his pocket? A two hander to the ankle or the back of the knees. What’s the first thing Crosby does when Zetterburg stops his rush? A two hander on the wrist or a cheap shot to the back of the head. There’s plenty of tape to prove my point. I guess HockeyMike dosen’t have enough “FREE TIME” to watch that tape.

  8. HockeyMike - Aug 31, 2010 at 4:31 PM

Again Nicolai…Please tell me, is ever damn Ranger fan illiterate???
I did not defend Sid’s dirty play nor deny it, I said everyone does the same crap. BUT, He is followed around with a microscope. When he is on the ice ALL eyes are on him. That’s the price a superstar pays.Like him or hate him that’s the way it is. I saw the games against the Wings and I agree you stupid turd. That was never denied. Learn how to read and comprehend. But ya know what Nicolai, fact of the matter is that if Sid was on the Rangers do you know what would happen??? They would be a contender, so go crawl under your rock douche bag.

  9. zack - Sep 1, 2010 at 12:37 PM

Crosby’s definitely a cheap player, but it’d be hard to consider him dirty. I’ve never seem him go flying at someone with intent to injure. Booooooogard is a dirty player. Steve Downie is a really dirty player. Crosby just gets away with a lot more than other players though. If the refs would police him more, there wouldn’t be a need for people to consider him dirty.

  10. Anonymous - Sep 2, 2010 at 1:40 PM

    WOW! You’re just a d*ck.
Nice work calling me illiterate in the same sentence you misspell “every”. Also you did call the Red Wings dirty:
“I just finished watching reruns on the Pens-Wings series and if there were more Wings cheap shots in a series that were not called I would love to see them.”
You’ve now proven yourself to be an self-condradicting, ignorant blowhard. And oh yeah, you’re a d*ck

  11. HockeyMike - Sep 3, 2010 at 8:37 PM

So let me get this straight…You are too stupid to remember your user name and need to sign in Anonymous?!?!? Ok-I get it, you are just a friggin moron that probably is cleaning toilets for a living.. Go away already douche bag, I don’t have time for derelicts.

People from Detroit. Their IQ is about as high as their unemployment rate.

  13. TXRW - Sep 4, 2010 at 11:02 PM

Detroit fans don’t hate sidney because they’re jealous or crap like that. Hell, the Wings shut him down almost every game. And it wasn’t Crosby that dominated the finals in ’09, it was Malkin. Zetterberg shut down sidney in the finals. Zetterberg shadows sidney almost every game and it pissed him off to the point that he starts throwing cheap crosschecks and slashes. And how easily pen’s fans seem to forget who won the cup in ’08. Srsly, when a team has as much success as detroit does, who the hell do they have to be jealous of?

  14. World Champion Hawks - Sep 5, 2010 at 5:10 PM

Hockey Mike — project much? All your foul mouthed insults only show us what kind of low life moron you are. Talk hockey, not trash. And I’ll reply to your rant when you read this now: STFU.

  15. Mittdropper - Sep 7, 2010 at 8:57 AM

I can remember when Pittsburgh was a garbage hole, and all the steel mills in that area were closing down, along with large numbers of people losing jobs, similar to what is going on in Detroit now ? Not sure what the economic status of a city has to do with a hockey argument, unless someone is just grasping at straws due to lack of hockey knowledge. Wings don’t fear Sid, Zetterberg has shut him down in every series. Sid is one of the more dynamic players in hockey, there’s no need for him to do the whining / diving / and slashing when things don’t go his way, his talent alone should do his talking for him. I don’t expect Penguin fans to understand that, because 90% of them got on board when the Pens started winning again.

  16. Henry - Sep 16, 2010 at 11:42 AM

What did Crosby do in the Finals? It was Malkin and the third and fourth lines that won it for them, plus Detroit was playing hurt far more than Pittsburgh was.
Is it tough to cross check someone multiple times in the back at the end of a game? Ask Z what he thinks of Sid the Dip.
Sid the Lip is a spoiled little kid who cries to everyone when things do not go right for him. I wish he was treated like everyone else is by the refs.equotte 1864-1865

If thepensblog is so irrelevant, why is this entire article stemmed from one of their posts?

  18. dannyboy - Sep 20, 2010 at 6:55 PM

Crosby is a cheap player? a dirty player? Riiiiiight. EVERY player takes a whack at another during the season. 87 is one of the best in the league all around. Faceoffs, backchecking, shooting, passing, taking the body. He doesn’t cherry pick like Ovenchicken. He doesn’t talk sh*t like Semen and not back it up. He wins. To be honest, Pitt wouldn’t have a hockey team and a new stadium without Sid.
It’s not like he’s Ulf and Kasparaitis (spelling?) and taking knees out.
And the trash talking comin from Flyer fans is pathetic. Ur like the smartest person on the short bus. It just doesn’t really matter.
    Suck it. Go pens.

  19. Islangers - Oct 23, 2010 at 1:45 AM

Guess I’m joining the party a little late, but here goes…
I’m first a fanatic of hockey and then a Ranger fan and Islander fan.
Having said that, I will try to appear literate because that seems so important to some.
Is Crosby dirty? Sometimes. Do I wish he was on my team? Yes. I could do without the endless whining and complaining, but he’s the real deal, people. For perspective, I love having Sean Avery on my team. It’s the grit.
One cannot make fair comparisons of Crosby to Gretzky, because the rules under which the game is played are far different now compared to then.
I would like to ask: why hasn’t Malkin’s name come up in the dirty player discussion? To my, he’s the worst offender on that team!
I’m a New Yorker and I learned to skate when I was three. I played for my high school team (my college didn’t have a team), and I then played in an adult league until I became injured fifteen years ago. Does that mean I’m a better judge of this question than a well-versed hockey fan? No!
Keep to the topic folks, without the flaming.

Hockey Mike, when have you ever seen Zetterberg take a cheap shot at ANYONE you idiot.

  22. gdeli - Jan 10, 2011 at 12:20 PM

that 77 of the lightning is a hack! sidney got rid of the puck and the guy takes a james harrison(another goon) like cheap shot. Play gretzky hockey or get off the ice if your not good enough! what is this infatuation with violence in hockey? I’d rather see great players making great moves.

  23. drub1959 - Jan 10, 2011 at 1:36 PM

Play Gretzky hockey? Gretzky wasn’t opposed to any goon tactics or being dirty. He had Dave Semenko take care of all of his rough stuff. The hit that Crosby took recently was a cheap shot but that does not make him a “clean” player.

  24. steelernation1 - Jan 11, 2011 at 12:24 PM

wow this article is a waste of internet time, you want to talk about dirty players and ones who give dirty his.Obichken is the most dirty player in the NHL,i will explain now

who has been one of the top scorers for last few years?Obichken.
Why is he not this year?because he spends more time skating around the ice looking to hurt players,if he spent mopre time shooting the puck and focusing on his shot instead of flying around the rink hitting people he may just be up with Sid The Kid in scoring,

i do not see Crosby as a dirty player at all,i think most of the time he is protecting himself from the dirty hits like in the winter classics that i am sorry to say was a dirty hit.i dotn care what anyone says.jerk off cannot say he didnt see Crosby there.thats just a lame excuse.
